During the academic year 2024-2025, I Tatti will award two residential Fellowships to African nationals whose research focuses on interactions within and between the African continent and the larger Mediterranean region during the early modern period (14th–17th centuries). The fellowships, which were made possible by a generous grant from the Getty Foundation and are intended for academics working on African artistic and architectural material (including those working in archaeology and anthropology), aim to foster and encourage collaboration between academics working in African institutions and those working in European and North American institutions.

Projects will look at how antiquity has been received in the modern era (a major topic for the African nations that had once been a part of the Roman empire), as well as how early modern artworks, crafts, and practises from the Eurafrica region have been received and how they have affected the modern and contemporary world. Projects that connect the vast histories of Italy, North Africa, and the Mediterranean with the visual and material history of Sub-Saharan Africa are of special interest to them.

The Fellows will automatically participate in a series of multi-day events that will take place at I Tatti and, if possible, at one or more African universities during the 2024–2025 academic year as part of the larger Black Mediterranean/Mediterraneo Nero project. (Details on the eventual programming schedule, which will be specifically designed to take into account the initiatives of the Appointees, will be provided later.) The two Fellows will be based at I Tatti and will be a part of a vibrant interdisciplinary community of academics whose research focuses on the Mediterranean and Mediterranean cultures.

Terms of the African Based I Tatti Getty Black Mediterranean Fellowship Program

  • The monthly stipend is USD 5,200 plus a one-time relocation expenditure supplement of up to USD 1,500. Due to the fellowship’s residential nature, Fellows are required to reside in the Florence region and visit the centre at least three days each week. When possible, a rent-free flat will be reserved for the Fellow’s use, while utilities will be charged. In the absence of a flat, a housing subsidy will be made available to aid with renting payments.
  • Candidates should specify whether they prefer the winter-spring season (January through June) or the autumn (September through December). All benefits of the Harvard Centre are available to fellows, including daily access to the Biblioteca Berenson and Monday through Friday lunches with other appointees. Term Fellows will have their own desk or carrel in the Library but will not be provided with an office or study. Throughout the entirety of their fellowship, Fellows are prohibited from taking on any additional responsibilities, including full- or part-time teaching roles. A fellowship or award cannot be held in conjunction with the fellowship.
  • It is the Fellow’s responsibility to get a visa, a permit to stay in Italy, and health insurance (as well as, if necessary, coverage for any accompanying family members). The Fellow is responsible for determining whether a visa is necessary and, if so, securing one prior to departure.

eligibility requirements

  • African nationals alone may apply for the fellowships, with preference given to researchers based at or affiliated with African universities, museums, and cultural institutions. Candidates must be native speakers of either English, Italian, or French and have their PhD certificates in hand before applying (they will be required to attach a scan of them while doing so).
  • Successful candidates will have a strong foundation in premodern Africa and its international interactions. If selected, candidates will spend four or six months working at I Tatti in Florence, where they will have access to a variety of local and regional resources, including libraries, photography collections, archives, museums, and collections.
  • It will be expected of the Fellows to conduct original research on the subject of their fellowship. At I Tatti, term fellowships can only be held once and cannot be postponed. Except for Graduate Fellows, term fellowships are meant for academics who have never held positions at I Tatti.
