A 501(c)(3) non-profit organisation dedicated to international conservation, the Ceiba Foundation for Tropical Conservation promotes and supports diversity in environmental science. With the help of our Humboldt Diversity Scholarships, students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and those with little financial resources can visit the tropics and acquire experience conducting biological research and protecting the environment abroad. Only Ceiba’s “Tropical Conservation Semester: Galapagos, Andes, and Amazon” or one of our summer programmes in Ecuador or Belize are eligible for scholarships. Scholarships are offered between $1,000 and $5,000. The number of awards available and the size of the scholarships vary depending on the program’s duration, application demand, and applicant need.

  • Only students enrolled in Ceiba study abroad programmes may submit an application.

  • Have already applied or be in the process of applying to a Ceiba Foundation Study Abroad programme for the coming semester or summer session. Those seeking for scholarships must fulfil the minimal requirements for the programme to which they are applying.
  • Presently enrolled in a two- to four-year undergraduate programme in an American university or community college that has received accreditation. Students enrolled in universities under the University of Wisconsin System will be given preference.
  • Have a cumulative GPA that demonstrates academic success and be in good academic standing (not on academic probation).
  • Show that you have a financial need by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and a Student Aid Report (SAR) form, or by providing other supporting documentation.

Application

  • Please confirm that you meet all of the requirements given above before contacting courses@ceiba.org to submit an application for scholarships for the Spring of 2024.
  • Please refer to the specific programme websites for dates; scholarship applications are due at the same time as programme applications. Only applications that are complete will be reviewed.

Review and notification of applicants

Each qualifying applicant will be thoroughly examined by the applicant evaluation committee, taking into account the following factors:

  • Budgetary Need
  • Honour Roll
  • Essays’ quality and content
  • As part of the selection process, candidates could be asked to take part in a quick phone interview. The number of applicants and their level of need will determine the availability and size of the scholarships given. The value of the awards will be between $1,000 and $5,000. About two weeks after the programme application deadline, selected candidates will be informed of their scholarship offer along with their programme acceptance.

Requirements for Award

  • Being accepted into a Ceiba study abroad programme and completing a comprehensive application before the application deadline are requirements for receiving a scholarship.
  • You must enrol in the programme you’ve applied to in order to receive the promised sum.
  • The scholarship money won’t be given to you directly. Instead, the Ceiba Foundation transfers your Diversity award to your study abroad program’s tuition and fees, lowering your overall out-of-pocket expenses by the amount of the award.
  • Within 30 days of their return from the programme, recipients of Diversity Scholarships are required to send a letter of thanks to the sponsors (through Ceiba) outlining how the experience has impacted their academic and personal growth.
