A rigorous academic and enrichment programme, Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS), is created for African secondary school students who want to pursue university study and who want to have a significant effect as young leaders on the continent.

Participants will develop their academic abilities, get advice on selecting a university and a professional route, and join a network of young African leaders. Students will be assigned with mentors after the programme, who will provide guidance when they apply to universities.
Participants in both programmes will improve their academic abilities, receive assistance with applying for admission to universities and financial aid, and join a network of young African leaders. After the programme, mentors will be assigned to each student, who will get guidance from them when they apply to universities.
Dates of the YYAS 2024 Programme: 18–23 July 2024 for the five-day online YYAS College Prep Workshop. * YYAS Leadership Summit (9–18 August 2024; residential; 10 days in Zimbabwe).
Eligibility
- Applicants MUST meet all of the following prerequisites in order to apply to YYAS:
- Age: To be eligible, you must be between the ages of 14 and 18 on July 18, 2024. Please be aware that YYAS students typically range in age from 16 to 17.
- English: You must be proficient enough to engage in a demanding academic curriculum delivered in English.
- Citizenship: You must be an African national or a permanent resident of one. Applications from refugees residing in African nations will also be accepted by YYAS.
- You must currently be enrolled in school in an African nation.
- Grade Level: You must be a student currently enrolled in the 10th or 11th grade (or its equivalent in another country).
- Date of graduation: If you attend school in the Northern Hemisphere, you must complete secondary school by May/June 2025 at the earliest and May/June 2026 at the latest. If you go to school in the Southern Hemisphere, you must complete secondary school by November/December 2024 at the earliest and 2025 at the latest.
African Young Scholars at Yale 2024
- YYAS will provide a residential programme option and an online programme option in 2024. Both programmes have no tuition fees associated with enrollment.
- Online YYAS Workshop:
- 200 students will be admitted to the YYAS Workshop, which is available to students from all African nations.
- For the length of the programme, participants must be able to access Zoom and Canvas on their own smartphone, tablet, or computer with dependable internet.
- The programme will concentrate on exploring career options, getting ready for the university admission process, and adjusting to life after high school.
- Due to the short programme duration, YYAS has tight attendance requirements, and students are not allowed to skip even one day of the programme.
- Students who complete the programme successfully will be given a pdf YYAS Certificate of Completion, which they can use on their applications to colleges and universities. The YYAS Workshop (online) is available without cost at all.
(Residence in Zimbabwe) YYAS Summit - Students from all African nations are welcome to attend the YYAS Summit, which will admit 120 students.
- For ten (10) days, students will live on a residential school campus in Zimbabwe.
- The programme will emphasise leadership, innovation, design, and 21st century skills in addition to the same college prep subjects covered in the online workshop.
- Due to the short programme duration, YYAS has tight attendance requirements, and students are not allowed to skip even one day of the programme.
- Students who complete the programme successfully will be given a pdf YYAS Certificate of Completion, which they can use on their applications to colleges and universities.
- The YYAS Summit offers free housing, meals, and all academic course materials in addition to having no tuition ($0).
- Each student must be able to travel to and from Zimbabwe for the YYAS Summit (a residential in Zimbabwe), which they will plan, fundraise for, and arrange themselves.
Learner Profile
A typical YYAS participant consists of:
- Outstanding academic records
- Demonstrated capacity for leadership
- Strong communication skills, both in writing and speaking
- A desire for and capacity for collaborative work among peers
- Perseverance and tenacity in the face of difficulties
- High standards of behaviour both personally and professionally
- Reading, analysing, and reflecting on a significant amount of challenging English-language material with maturity and enthusiasm in engaging in conversations about intellectual, moral, and political issues in Africa
Application
- Step 1: Go over the YYAS eligibility requirements.
- Step 2: Examine the YYAS application’s necessary parts.
- Step 3 Review a PDF of an example blank application before beginning to plan your responses to as many of the questions as you can.
- Step 4 Providing contact information for a parent/guardian, teacher, or other official at your school is required. Get in touch with them as soon as you can to go over the PDF of a sample blank application with them, and make sure you get the data you require.
Fill out the form completely:
- Step 5: To begin your YYAS application, click APPLY NOW. Remembering your email and password will allow you to access the programme later. The applications must be submitted by the deadlines of 10 November 2023 at 11:59 EST for Early Action and 25 January 2024 at 11:59 EST for Regular Decision.
- Step 6: Review the application’s “Review” page to check if you are missing any necessary components, and go back to any pages that need further details.
- Step 7 After completing your application, go to the “Review” tab. At the bottom of the page, click the “Submit Application” button to continue.
- Step 8: Look for a YYAS confirmation receipt in your mailbox to ensure that your application was successfully submitted. Due to sporadic delays in payment processing, confirmation emails often appear 24 to 48 hours after submission.
