For foreign researchers from developing nations in the South who want to conduct postdoctoral research in a field of the natural and related applied sciences in the departments and labs of public and private universities in Türkiye as well as TÜBTAK Research Centres and Institutes, the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TÜBTAK) and TWAS have established a fellowship programme.

The Fellowships are tenable for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 36 months at the departments and labs of Turkish public and private universities.
The following fields are eligible for the programme:
Biological systems and organisms, structural, cell, and molecular biology, medical and health sciences, including neurosciences, chemical sciences, engineering sciences, astronomy, space, and earth science, and mathematics make up the first eight categories.
i. Physics j. Computer science and information technology.

Eligibility

Candidates for these fellowships must fulfil the requirements listed below:

  • Be citizens of a South Asian developing nation with permanent residence (https://twas.org/developing-countries-south).
  • Women and candidates from STLCs (Science and Technology Lagging Countries) are particularly encouraged to apply.

NB: Developing nations that aren’t on the list can still apply.
not possess any visas allowing for either temporary or long-term residence in Turkey or any other developed nation

  • Be employed in and have a research assignment in a developing nation other than the host nation. The head/director of the applicant’s existing employer must provide a supporting statement in the format required by TÜBTAK (see sample that may be downloaded below or via the TÜBTAK online application website). The purpose of the supporting statement is to back up the candidate’s application and demonstrate that, if approved, leave will be granted.
  • Possess a PhD in natural or closely related applied sciences (in one of the above-mentioned subjects);
  • A maximum age of 45 years as of the application year’s December 31;
  • Present an official Acceptance Letter from an appropriate department, institution, or lab of a Turkish public or private university, or from TÜBTAK Research Centres and Institutes (see sample below or from online application website of TÜBTAK).
  • NB: Requests for acceptance should be sent to the Turkish institution(s) of choice, NOT TÜBTAK. The application won’t be taken into consideration for selection if preliminary acceptance isn’t given. The host institute’s highest ranking official must sign the acceptance letter. There can be a maximum of two academic advisors in Turkey.
  • Candidates who earned their PhD from a Turkish university are needed to submit an admission letter from a different institution and conduct their research under the supervision of one or more academic advisors other than the one who oversaw their doctoral thesis.
  • Please submit the Research Proposal Form in the manner specified by TÜBTAK (see sample below or from TÜBTAK’s online application page);
  • Cite examples of your English language expertise. If English was not the primary language of instruction, you must show proof in English, such as a TOEFL or IELTS score report or a letter from the university attesting to your language proficiency. If English was the applicant’s primary language of instruction, please make a brief statement stating what level of education, such as high school or a BSc or MSc, was completed in English; this statement must be signed and dated by the applicant;
  • Not accept any additional tasks while receiving the fellowship;
  • Be liable for the support of any accompanying family members financially;
  • Not have received or been granted a fellowship under this scheme in the past;
  • Must leave the fraternity and return to their nation of origin;
