A promising journalist is given the Michelle Lang Fellowship early in their career, giving them the chance to develop their professional abilities and gain experience by spending a full year working in two of Canada’s busiest newsrooms.

In order to honour a brave and outstanding young journalist who paid the ultimate price while carrying out important work, the Michelle Lang Fellowship was established. The fellow will spend half of their year working for Postmedia in Calgary’s newsroom, which includes the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun, and half for the National Post.

The fellowship includes a specific project that enables the winner to concentrate on a subject of top priority to Canadians. The Fellow will become a subject expert on an issue deserving of greater notice through their work on the project, which will add to a national discourse.

The Michelle Lang Trust and Postmedia are providing financing for the fellowship, which comes with a yearly salary.

Duration

  • Beginning in early 2024, the fellow will spend six months covering breaking news and in-depth stories across the country for the National Post, and then work for roughly another six months for the Calgary Herald, a significant metro daily.

Criteria

  • This grant is open to all students, not only those majoring in journalism, as Michelle Lang held a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. A dedication to journalism and a passion of storytelling in all its forms are the selection criteria.
  • Strong communication and writing abilities.
  • A healthy sense of curiosity and the drive to use journalism to affect the world.
  • A capacity for collaboration with others.
  • Simple reporting abilities.
  • French or other language bilingualism is viewed favourably.
  • Experience working for a daily newspaper in the past is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Candidates that are chosen must have a current driver’s licence.
  • The Fellowship is open to candidates with outstanding writing and communication abilities, a natural curiosity, and a willingness to use journalism to affect change from any educational background.
