Tasks and Responsibilities
- A wide spectrum of collaborators, including scientists, fisheries specialists, policy experts, resource managers, technicians, and conservationists, provided their experience and insight to the authors and editors.
- The collaboration publication on “Chondrichthyans of the Western Indian Ocean: Biodiversity, Fisheries and Trade, Management and Conservation” is being edited for this purpose by a scientist editor who is competent and experienced in their field.
- The science editor will be expected to work in accordance with the specific Terms of Reference set forth in the following sections.
- PURPOSES AND GOALS The aim of the consultation is to lead the publication and printing for distribution of the manuscript titled “Chondrichthyans of the Western Indian Ocean: Biodiversity, Fisheries and Trade, Management and Conservation.”
- The consultant will work on the following projects associated with the book “Chondrichthyans of the Western Indian Ocean: Biodiversity, Fisheries and Trade, Management and Conservation” under the general supervision of the Head of the Secretariat of the Nairobi Convention and the project manager in particular: Review, edit to a high standard, and proofread the text to make sure it is accurate, uses the correct language, is consistent and clear, and complies with UNEP style requirements.
- â€Revise or rewrite text as necessary to provide better readability and logical flow.
- †Suggest layout changes to the document that will improve user-friendliness and flow, and implement these as approved.
- â€Make sure the publication complies with UNEP editorial style requirements and gives due credit to the Nairobi Convention, the authors, and all partners and programs that contributed to it.
- â€Accommodate or update any input, recommendations, or other modifications that partners may make.
- Create PDF files for distribution online or via electronic means.
- Create PDF files that are print-ready for printing.
qualifications and unique abilities
- It is necessary to have a graduate-level education (Master’s or equivalent) in a science, communications, or allied field. Instead of the advanced degree, a first-level university degree plus two more years of experience working as a science editor or writer may be acceptable.
- It is necessary to have five years of professional experience in the fields of scientific editing, technical writing, proofreading, and publishing.
- It is necessary to have a strong grasp of advanced and technical English, as well as of scientific terminologies and norms, editorial standards, and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- It is necessary to have a thorough understanding of printing and production procedures, standards, and knowledge of online publication.
- Experience working for UNEP, other UN Agencies, or the Western Indian Ocean region will be beneficial.
- Experience working with the UNEP or other international organizations with a similar mission would be ideal.
- Experience in a subject including environmental protection, sustainable development, and marine research is a plus.
Languages
The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. English proficiency is necessary for the role advertised.
