Germany is dedicated to upholding and advancing human rights worldwide. In order to achieve this, the Federal Foreign Office provides funds for initiatives promoting human rights. German budget regulations must be followed while spending and recording this money. Only particular projects with a set, well-defined scope and duration are eligible for such funding. Institutional support for human rights organisation cannot be given, for example by taking on ongoing staffing or operational expenditures.
Objectives
- Building up civil society, particularly by assisting human rights organisations, media, and project activities run by these organisations; fostering local, national, and regional networks; safeguarding journalism; and fostering freedom of the press.
- Defending and advancing the rights of women, such as by combating gender-based discrimination, stopping the trafficking of women, supporting initiatives to stop “honour killings,” aiding initiatives to stop cruel traditional customs like genital mutilation, and preventing violence against women, including during armed conflict.
- Promoting female political engagement and gender equality.
- Defending and advancing the rights of children, such as through preventing child labour, child trafficking, and sexual exploitation, and by aiding children caught up in violent conflict.
- Projects that advocate for the suspension or repeal of the death sentence, such as funding seminars with German or European experts or improvements to the criminal justice and prison systems.
- Economic, social, and cultural rights (ESCR), for instance, through assisting with projects pertaining to the right to water, food, and shelter; assisting with projects pertaining to health; assisting with projects pertaining to education.
The realms indicated above are just a few examples; other crucial areas include:
