Organisation Reporting and Setting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading international environmental organization that establishes the global environmental agenda, encourages the consistent application of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the framework of the United Nations, and acts as a powerful spokesperson for the environment worldwide.

The Ecosystems Division of UNEP collaborates with international and domestic partners to increase the environmental management capabilities of developing nations and those undergoing economic transition by offering technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policies.

The job oversees UNEP’s programming on biodiversity and sustainable use strategically. In addition to other interventions aiming at promoting sustainable use and minimizing threats to biodiversity in natural environments, this job supervises evidence-based policy and practice interventions on integrated health and biodiversity interventions, wildlife/biodiversity economy, and other topics.

It will be necessary to work closely with international, regional, and national organizations and experts, as well as with other UNEP technical teams, including UNEP Regional Offices and other UN agencies, on joint projects and actions on issues related to biodiversity management. It will also be necessary to prepare UNEP briefing notes, project concept notes, and funding proposals.

This position is based in the Biodiversity, People, and Landscapes Unit of the Ecosystems Division’s Biodiversity and Land Branch (BLB) in Nairobi, Kenya, and it reports to the unit’s head. The following responsibilities will fall on the incumbent:

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and evaluates assigned programs and projects, such as the Wild Biodiversity Economy and integrating biodiversity conservation and management with social and economic needs; monitors and analyzes program and project development and implementation; reviews pertinent documents and reports; identifies issues and problems that need to be addressed and takes corrective action; coordinates with relevant parties; and ensures follow-up actions.
  • Work with the UNEP Global Environment Facility (GEF) team to organize, support, and promote the creation of new GEF projects that add value to the UNEP Program of Work, as well as to ease the technical alignment and integration of current UNEP-GEF initiatives.
  • Encourage the creation and execution of the Mainstreaming Biodiversity Project and the Programme Coordination Project on Conservation, Restoration, and Sustainable Use.
  • Choosing, hiring, and managing project consultants.
  • Gathers data from a variety of sources, does research on it, and delivers the findings.
  • Coordinates the development of policies, including the examination and evaluation of problems and trends, the creation of assessments or other research projects and studies,
  • Creates survey initiatives; plans data gathering methods; evaluates, examines, and deciphers replies; identifies issues; and drafts conclusions.
  • Arranges and produces written outputs, including portions of reports and studies, background papers in draft form, analyses, and contributions to publications.
  • Offers substantive support for conferences, meetings, and other consultative gatherings, including suggesting agenda items, locating participants, and creating documents and presentations.
  • Plans and executes outreach initiatives; runs seminars and training sessions; and gives presentations on tasks/activities that have been given to them.
  • Oversees and/or takes part in large-scale, complex field missions, including writing mission summaries and giving advice to other parties such external consultants, government representatives, and others.
  • Coordinates the development of related documentation and reports (such as pledges, work plans, and program budgets), as well as the preparation and filing of programs and projects, progress reports, and financial statements.
  • Compiles and analyzes data to find trends or patterns, and then uses data visualization techniques to communicate insights through graphs, charts, tables, and reports to support data-driven planning, decision-making, presenting, and reporting.
  • Performs other tasks as needed.

Education

  • A graduate degree from an advanced university (Master’s level or equivalent) in a related discipline, such as applied ecology, ecosystem management, natural resource management, wildlife management, conservation science, or management of biodiversity, is necessary.
  • The advanced university degree may be substituted with a first-level university degree and two (2) more years of relevant experience.
  • It would be ideal to successfully complete both degree-granting and non-degree data analytics, business analytics, or data science programs.

Experience at Work

It is necessary to have a minimum of seven (7) years of steadily increasing responsibility in project or program management for projects and/or programs linked to biodiversity management and ecosystems.

Working on biodiversity at the world level and in developing nations for at least three (3) years is necessary.

It is necessary to have knowledge about multinational biodiversity accords.

It would be ideal if you have experience organizing, leading, and managing multi-sectoral partnerships and activities.

It would be ideal to have supervisory expertise leading multicultural teams.

Experience in data analytics or a related field of two (2) years or more is preferred.

Languages

The working languages of the United Nations Secretariat are English and French. English proficiency is necessary for the role advertised. It would be ideal to know another official UN language.

NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in each of the four domains (read, write, speak, understand)”

and in two of the four domains, “knowledge of” yields a rating of “confident”.
