Financial Details
Amount of Grant: $2,500,000
Two years and six months
Specific results of the money or grant
- The project, as well as domestic priorities, resources, and other funding, must show how the award complements, leverages, and is additional to existing sources of support. The Project aims to deliver proof of concept through market-based innovation, services, business models, and technology in line with SHF’s overall strategic goals. The Project’s particular goals are:
- The Project will increase access to safely managed sanitation and hygiene facilities in secondary towns and cholera hotspots in Nigeria and will promote City-wide Inclusive Sanitation (CWIS) approaches. The goal is to improve public health, including reducing cholera, through increased access to on-site/off-grid safely managed sanitation and hygiene facilities for vulnerable populations.
- The project will assist in bringing safely managed sanitation and hygiene solutions closer to communities, lowering transactions and making these services more available, dependable, and inexpensive. This will contribute to a healthy sanitation economy and specifically shorten the sanitation value chain. This will cover, but not be limited to, strategies that improve the management of faeces, including its collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal.
- The Project will offer solutions, where appropriate, to advance the reuse of human waste, for instance by deploying straightforward transformation technologies that combine human waste and other agricultural waste streams to produce a solid biomass fuel. This will help the sanitation value chain advance climate-smart and waste-to-energy solutions.
- To promote the economic empowerment of women, including through involvement in the regional sanitation sector: The Project will incorporate techniques for creating SMEs that guarantee the inclusion of women in the sanitation sector as leaders, business owners, employees, and knowledgeable consumers. The Project will also try to show how better access to economic empowerment for women is correlated with their ability to manage their own sanitation and hygiene.
The intended recipients
- The main target demographic resides in high-density (presumably informal) urban poor environments in small towns and secondary towns. They frequently have cholera outbreaks (i.e., they reside in a cholera hotspot), and/or they are more susceptible to the negative health and economic effects of a lack of sanitation and hygiene. These populations are quite likely to be found at the base of the economic pyramid or in the lower wealth quintiles. The primary target group is women, and the emphasis is on their economic empowerment and well-being.
- Nigeria is the main country.
