All composers, regardless of nationality, are now eligible to apply for the Black Pencil Award 2023.
The Black Pencil Award 2023 will be given to a brand-new work composed for the five instruments that make up the Black Pencil ensemble: recorder, panflute, viola, accordion, and percussion. Harpsichord, (live) electronics, film, and/or theatrical components may also be included in the composition.

There are no restrictions on age or application fees. The composition should last between four and eight minutes, minimum.
Additionally, Black Pencil will be the ensemble in residence at the Orgelpark Amsterdam for the Prix Annelie de Man 2023, which runs from November 29 to December 3, 2023. It implies that you may rely on the virtuoso members of Black Pencil for their knowledge while developing new pieces that make use of the ensemble’s instrumentation.

The piece was performed during a number of Black Pencil events.
We’ll take into account additional prizes.
Criteria
- The jury will select three to five pieces to perform at the Prix Annelie de Man festival, from which the winning composition will be chosen.
- Candidates must provide:
- Newest biography, no more than 200 words (in English)
- A current, high-resolution image of the composer
- An annotation on the programme: a breakdown of the composition.
- A brief explanation of any particular characteristics, such as the preparation of instruments, electronics, graphics, props, intricate staging, etc., if appropriate.
- The piece’s parts and score, as well as the essential performance directions, are all available in PDF format. You do not need to use a pseudonym; just use your real name.
- A reference MIDI audio file in mp3 format
- It should be noted that a composer is welcome to submit multiple works.
