The Commonwealth Foundation manages and finances the annual Commonwealth Short Story Prize, which is given to unpublished short stories. Africa, Asia, Canada, Europe, the Caribbean, and the Pacific are the regions of the Commonwealth that are included in the reward. (For a list of nations in each region, see Section 5).

Requirements

  • Any citizen of a Commonwealth nation who is at least 18 years old may enter for free to win the prize.
  • It is given for the finest unpublished, short story between 2,000 and 5,000 words.
  • Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Creole, English, French, Greek, Malay, Maltese, Portuguese, Samoan, Swahili, Tamil, and Turkish are among the other languages that accept submissions. Any narrative that has been translated from another language into English is welcome, and the translator of any story that wins will receive additional compensation.

Eligibility

A Commonwealth country citizen or a stateless person already residing in a Commonwealth country is required to enter. For a list of Commonwealth nations, see Section 5. Before choosing the awardees, the Commonwealth Foundation will require proof of citizenship. Citizens of nations outside the Commonwealth are not permitted to submit entries.

b. For regional considerations, entries will be evaluated according to nationality. If a writer holds dual citizenship in two Commonwealth nations, their entry will be evaluated in the area in which they dwell permanently.

b. As long as the author is a citizen of one of the Commonwealth nations, current residence in one of those nations is not necessary.

d. Participants must be at least 18 years old on November 1, 2023.

e. The Commonwealth Foundation reserves the right to accept or reject any entry at its own discretion. The Commonwealth Foundation will use its discretion in deciding eligibility issues after consulting the prize chair. On eligibility-related issues, the chair’s decision is final, and no more correspondence will be started.

f. Submissions from previous Commonwealth Short Story Prize grand prize winners are ineligible. Additionally, those who have won the regional reward three times are ineligible to enter.

g. The Commonwealth Foundation does not accept submissions from existing employees.

h. Entries must not have been published and cannot be till May 1, 2024, in any language.

i. As long as it hasn’t been published, your entry is still eligible whether it has previously made the shortlist or won a prize in another contest.

Prizes

  • The overall winner receives $5,000 while the regional champions each receive £2,500.
  • The winning tales are printed in a special print collection by Paper + Ink and published online by Granta.
  • The Commonwealth Foundation’s online literary magazine adda publishes the shortlisted stories.
