The West African Research Center Travel Grant – Fall 2023 is now accepting applications. The WARC Travel Grant helps African scholars and graduate students travel for study to other institutions and areas of the continent by funding their travel expenses. This fosters intra-African cooperation and interaction among researchers and institutions.
Uses for travel grants include:
Visit archives or libraries in Africa that contain materials important to the applicant’s academic study.
Work in collaboration with coworkers at a different African institution.
visit a research location in Africa.
Grant
The WARC Travel Grant offers up to $1,500 in travel expenses as well as a $1,500 stipend.
Eligibility
Open only to citizens of West Africa, with preference given to individuals connected to West African academic institutions.
Application
A completed application must contain the following:
- Abstract of suggested activity (50–80 words) with a specific goal
- Project/Research Description (6 double-spaced pages maximum), explaining the need for travel (must be written in a manner that non-specialist readers can understand).
- suggested budget
- Curriculum vitae (including teaching and research experience)
- Passport photocopy (applicant must be a citizen of West Africa)
- Applications must all be made online and in PDF format.
- Every candidate needs a letter of recommendation.
- If going to another establishment:
- the host institution’s invitation
- a description of the collections to be consulted and their value to the applicant’s research, if the trip is to consult archives or other materials.
- a letter of recommendation from the professor who is supervising your study, if you are a graduate student.
