Assisting startups to develop minimum viable products (MVPs), create pitch decks, secure pertinent IP rights for their inventions, and connect them with mentors, investors, and other stakeholders in the innovation ecosystem, IP Labs will increase IP awareness for startups in Nigeria on leveraging IP for business. The Orbra Company will implement this Pilot, which is planned to last from August to December 2023.

Beneficiaries will learn how to leverage IP as a business development and finance strategy through WIPO’s IP Management Clinics. There will be two phases to the project’s execution.

For companies in their early stages, stage one (1) is a general coaching program on startup development, design-thinking, pitching, and introduction to intellectual property.
Incubation, acceleration, and IP Management Clinics (IPMC) are included in stage two (2).
IP Labs will assist startups in utilizing IP protection to expand their businesses, generate jobs, and support Nigeria’s economic development.

Benefits

A customized IP strategy, or an action plan to identify, develop, defend, and utilize a company’s portfolio of IP assets, is needed for each inventive company’s particular set of commercial issues. When used effectively, an IP strategy gives companies a competitive edge and boosts profitability.

While several IP Management Clinics provide varying degrees of specialization in particular IP domains, they share a basic methodology, format, and duration. Participants gain from a variety of activities spread out across time, such as:

one-on-one guidance on how to more effectively leverage IP for growth from a recognized IP expert or experts chosen by WIPO. On the panel, there is a variety of IP-related knowledge, including IP strategy, IP management, branding, valuation, licensing, and franchising.
Opportunities for training and access to useful resources and services
opportunities for peer networking

Eligibility

  • IP Labs is a national initiative that welcomes Nigerian businesses in the idea stage.
  • Everybody is welcome to join IP Labs Project if they have creative ideas for technologically advanced products and answers to problems that exist in local communities and around the world.
  • These problems can be related to finance, job creation, climate change, agriculture, etc. These concepts need to incorporate some aspect of intellectual property in order to qualify.

Application

The general coaching program on startup creation, design thinking, pitching, and introduction to IP will be completed by successful applicants. After stage one is over, participants that can enter stage two of the project—incubation, acceleration, and IP Management Clinics (IPMC)—with scalable minimum viable products (MVP) with potential for industrial application and IP protection will be further screened.
