In the summer of 2024, the Mandela Washington Fellowship will send up to 700 young leaders to the US for a thorough executive-style program aimed at developing their leadership abilities in their various fields and communities.

Conditions for Eligibility

There shall be no discrimination against applicants based on their race, color, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic situation, or gender identity. Young African leaders who fit the following qualifications are eligible for the Mandela Washington Fellowship:

  • Are between the ages of 25 and 35 as of the application deadline, while exceptional candidates between the ages of 21 and 24 will also be taken into consideration;
  • neither permanent residents nor citizens of the United States;
  • are qualified to obtain a J-1 visa for the United States;
  • are not employed by the United States government (including USAID or another branch of the government), nor are they related to any employee of the government in any way;
  • are capable of reading, writing, and speaking English (deaf applicants will receive special training);
  • Are citizens of one of the following nations: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Cote d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea

Selection Standards

  • An open competition based on merit is used to choose recipients of the Mandela Washington Fellowship.
  • Independent readers will examine each qualified application after the deadline. After this examination, selected semi-finalists will be contacted for an interview by the American embassies or consulates in their home nations.
  • These in-person interviews will be held in the home nations of the chosen semifinalists in Africa.
  • Candidates must present a copy of their international passport (if available) or other government-issued photo identification at the time of the interview if they make it to the semi-finalist stage.
  • Finalists who have been chosen must travel to their home country in Africa to participate in the Pre-Fellowship Orientation.

Applications will be judged according to the following standards (in no particular order of importance):

  1. a track record of success and leadership in business, entrepreneurship, community involvement, and/or public or government service;
  2. a track record of volunteerism, mentorship, or public or community service;
  3. the capacity to respect others’ perspectives and cooperate in a variety of groups;
  4. high levels of social and communicative ability;
  5. a vivacious, upbeat, and adaptable attitude;
  6. a clear plan for incorporating the information and abilities obtained from the Fellowship into one’s present and/or future job, as well as a demonstrated understanding of, interest in, and professional experience in the desired sector or Fellowship track;
  7. a promise to go back to Sub-Saharan Africa and use their abilities to help their neighbors and communities grow.
