The Africa Fellowship 2023 for Young Energy Leaders is now accepting applications. The Africa Energy Fellowship for Young Energy Leaders is an educational initiative created to support the energy leaders of the future who will provide sustainable energy access and, ultimately, a carbon-free Africa.

The program’s goal is to educate graduates, postgraduates, or PhD candidates in the fields of physics, electrical and electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, building and construction engineering, physics, and solar energy on the fundamentals of energy generation with a focus on renewable energy technology and opportunities for career advancement in the energy value chain.

Program Specifics

The objective is to develop entrepreneurs who will expand access to clean energy for 600 million people in Africa who currently lack it and to retain young African talent in a vital industry like renewable energy, which is essential to unlocking Africa’s sustainable future.

In a broad module, the program provides knowledge from international specialists on the tiny, utility-scale, and small-scale uses of four categories of renewable energy technology. Fellows then have the option to select one of the following specialty tracks:

  • Hydropower Solar PV Onshore Wind Bioenergy
  • For all fellows, include professional modules on Energy Transition in Africa and Electric Vehicle Engineering.

Eligibility

  • Be between the ages of 21 and 35 on the application deadline or earlier;
  • possess a degree in physics, electrical and electronics engineering, economics, mathematics, finance and accounting, physics and solar energy, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, building and construction engineering, or a related discipline, or be a postgraduate or PhD in one of these fields;
  • English reading, writing, and speaking proficiency
  • own one of the following nationalities: Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia,

Selection Standards

Applications will be judged according to the following standards (in no particular order of importance):

  • an established track record of success and leadership in the focus industries
  • a proven dedication to volunteerism, mentorship, or public or community service in relation to sustainable energy;
  • the capacity to respect others’ perspectives and cooperate in a variety of groups;
  • high levels of social and communicative ability;
  • a vibrant, upbeat outlook;
  • a track record of expertise, knowledge, and enthusiasm in the fields of engineering, economics, finance, or renewable energy.
