The Jenga Haki Lab is a HiiL ideation program that gets people with various skill sets and interests together and gives them a particular setting and amount of time to develop a quick fix for a particular issue. Jenga Haki Labs’ main objectives are to create a prototype of a solution and assemble a team of co-founders, all the while bolstering the justice sector and creating a pipeline for justice innovation. The program gives participants the chance to advance on issues that interest them while learning something new.
Background
Did you know that over a million Kenyans experience a crime problem each year, making crime the most prevalent justice issue in the country? However, up to 44% of Kenyans said they were unable to deal with the criminal issue they faced. Did you know that one in three Ugandans has issues with the criminal justice system, according to the HiiL Deep Dive Into Crime in Uganda Report 2020. Few crimes are ever reported to the police or a court of law. Unreported crimes may eventually result in mob punishment. Petty crime, like theft, is what happens to individuals most frequently. Even while violent crime is less frequent, it nonetheless negatively affects people’s wellbeing.

This round’s application theme is: How do you use technology to prevent or address issues related to crime in Kenya and Uganda?
Benefits
The five-week Jenga Haki Lab program gives the following to the chosen teams:
- Find talented and like-minded businesspeople to collaborate with on a solution.
- Training sessions throughout the 2-day Jenga Haki Weekend residential event and ensuing product development sprints. The instruction will cover:
- Using prototypes for human-centered design Creating for user testing
- Both project management and leadership
- Presentation and Pitching
- The teams had two weeks of product development sprints to design, create, and test their prototype.
- During the Jenga Haki Festival, present your idea in front of a three-person jury for the possibility to earn grant cash for:
- 1,000 euros will go to the winner, 750 euros to the first place finisher, and 500 euros to the second place finisher.
Eligibility
The program is appropriate for those who have creative ideas or solutions to address the justice issues associated with crime in Uganda and Kenya, such as:
- Monetary fraud
- A theft or armed robbery
- Home invasions or burglaries
- Domestic abuse
- offenses relating to sex
- All applicants must be willing to join or form teams of 4-5 people because Jenga Haki is also designed to support teams. At the time of application, team members must be over 18 and residents of or citizens of Kenya and Uganda.
- Jenga Haki seeks candidates with experience or training in:
- Legal and business expertise
- Possess a foundation in social sciences such as sociology, psychology, IT, or software development
