Before they are well-known, it can be challenging for writers to make a living while writing. The Morland Memorial Foundation (MMF) grants a small number of Morland Writing Scholarships each year to assist in meeting this need. Each Scholar is given time to write the first draft of a finished book. Anyone who writes in English and was born in Africa, or whose parents were both born in Africa, is eligible for the scholarships.
Qualifications
A candidate must upload an excerpt from a piece of writing in English that is between 2,000 and 5,000 words long, written in English, and has been published and made available for purchase in order to be considered for the scholarship. You must provide convincing proof that the piece you upload as part of your application has been both published AND made available for purchase.
A group of readers and judges assembled by the MMF will assess this. The submitted work will only be evaluated for literary value.
The Scholarships are not intended to fund academic or scientific research or works of particular interest like religious or political writings.
Such submissions or plans are not acceptable.
Grant
A stipend of £18,000 will be given to students who are producing fiction, and it will be paid out over the course of twelve months. Scholars who are producing non-fiction and need more time for their study may, at the Foundation’s discretion, be awarded a second grant, which would be paid over up to 18 months.
Requirements
Anyone who writes in English and was born in Africa, or whose parents were both born in Africa, is eligible for a scholarship.
