Early-career researchers or principal investigators with greater experience who have never conducted research on the welfare of wild animals should apply for Seed Grants. Within one or more broad topics, project proposals are requested for each Seed Grants call. They anticipate very cost-effective projects, with funds mostly going toward activities that are specifically related to welfare.
Themes
- Topic 1: Welfare of wild fish
- The second theme is quick welfare interventions.
Grant
The amount of the grant ranges from $2,000 to $30,000 USD.
Eligibility
- Anyone can apply for a Seed Grant, but they are particularly interested in supporting postdocs and PhD students who are just starting their careers in research and are interested in pursuing a long-term career in the field of wild animal welfare, as well as established researchers who want to diversify their research interests to include this area.
- Projects that stand alone or that expand the scope of an ongoing, non-Wild Animal Initiative-funded initiative by including a wild animal welfare component are both eligible.
- The principal investigator (PI) of each project must be connected to a university or other research organization (such as a government agency).
- All nations in which fieldwork will be conducted must be represented in the leadership of the project or among its partners. An NGO managing the project must be registered in the nation where the fieldwork will be done.
- Although they do finance other expense areas (such as stipends, salaries, and capital equipment) if they are properly justified in relation to the project aims, they give financial priority to direct research costs (such as supplies and materials).
Proposal Instructions
- The project’s relevance to the welfare of wild animals as defined by the Wild Animal Initiative must be made abundantly obvious in proposals.
- The project’s relation to one or more of the themes mentioned in the call for proposals must be explicitly stated in the proposal.
- In proposals, it should be made very clear how the project relates to several welfare sectors.
- If your project involves working with animals in the field or the lab, it must follow the guidelines set forth by the Wild Animal Initiative. Be aware that they are less inclined to choose a suggested project if it might hurt animals in any way. In the case of invasive methods, welfare considerations should be detailed in the animal methods form, and the methods should be supported by data demonstrating why using alternatives would not be practical.
- The study approach chosen must be explicitly justified in proposals, together with the resources available for the study and the team members’ areas of competence.
- Each project team member’s time commitment must be specified in detail in proposals, together with confirmation that they are able to fulfill that commitment.
