Highly motivated law students get the chance to learn about the goals and activities of the Legal Vice Presidency and the World Bank by participating in this program. Through the World Bank Legal Internship Program, people can contribute fresh viewpoints, ground-breaking concepts, and cutting-edge research experiences to the organization’s everyday operations and hone their legal expertise while working in a diverse setting.

By closely working with professionals in the Legal Vice Presidency, the program aims to provide you first-hand experiences of the regular operations of the World Bank. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the legal services provided by the Legal Vice Presidency and take part in high-profile events and conferences as a member of our team, working closely with exceptional and motivating development professionals and senior management.

Legal Internship Program at the World Bank


The World Bank Legal Internship Program is available to presently enrolled law school students three times a year for a maximum of three months at the World Bank Headquarters in Washington, D.C., as well as in some chosen country offices.

  • Can you work as a legal vice presidency intern?
  • Are you a citizen of one of the IBRD’s member states?
  • Are you pursuing your internship with us while enrolled in an LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or comparable legal academic program? (For instance, in order to qualify for the Summer Cycle of LIP, you must be enrolled in a June through August legal academic program.)
  • Have you mastered the English language to a high level?
  • You can work as an intern in the Legal Vice Presidency if you said yes to each of these questions. Candidates with a strong command of a second language, especially if it is one of the IBRD’s working languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish), will be given preference.

Both eligible overseas students and students in the United States are urged to apply.

When?

Summer internship program

The application process for the summer internship program will start on December 1 and end on December 31 (the internship period is for 10–12 weeks, usually between June and August, depending on the needs at the time). This is a fantastic chance for students who want to work full-time at the World Bank while they are enrolled in a legal degree during the summer.

Fall internship program

The application process for the fall internship program will run from April 1 through April 30 (the proposed internship period is for 10–12 weeks, usually between September and November, depending on the needs at the time). This is a fantastic chance for students participating in full-time law studies, part-time law programs, or evening law programs who want to get professional experience at the World Bank through externships during the academic year. Students who are permitted to take part in pre-completion OPT may work part-time (20 hours or less per week) while classes are in session, in accordance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations.

Spring internship program

The application process for the spring internship program will run from September 1 through September 30 (the proposed internship term is for 10–12 weeks, usually between March and May, depending on the needs at the time). This is a fantastic chance for students participating in full-time law studies, part-time law programs, or evening law programs who want to get professional experience at the World Bank through externships during the academic year. Students who are permitted to take part in pre-completion OPT may work part-time (20 hours or less per week) while classes are in session, in accordance with U.S. Department of Homeland Security regulations.

Each application period has a deadline during which all applications must be filed.

Internship in Country Offices: The Legal Vice Presidency has restricted its field internships to locations where one of its attorneys is on duty.

How might one apply?

  • Academic transcripts and documentation proving enrollment in a law program (LLB, JD, LLM, SJD, PhD, or equivalent).
  • For the current application session, write a brief essay responding to a research question set by the Legal Vice Presidency.
  • What part would you play?
  • As projects come up throughout the duration of the internship program, interns will probably be involved in a wide range of activities, including:
  • Carrying out a range of legal tasks as directed by the supervising attorney(s).
  • evaluating material, summarizing conclusions, and conducting research on assigned topics utilizing existing legal files and alternative sources (such as computer-assisted searches using the internet, intranet, and/or other databases).
  • comparing legal opinions on various issues in a certain field, recognizing legal and policy issues, looking for pertinent precedents, and coming up with workable solutions.
  • joining task or project teams with the attorney(s) in charge of supervision.
  • helping to organize and prepare for conferences and meetings.
  • completing special projects at the direction of the overseeing attorney(s).

Additional Details

Student visas must be sponsored by their educational institutions for participants in the World Bank Legal Internship Program. Participants in the World Bank Legal Internship Program may only receive special assistance from the World Bank in obtaining visa paperwork.

Cost: The World Bank will not charge or otherwise compensate participants in the World Bank Legal Internship Program. However, each World Bank Legal Intern must be compensated in accordance with World Bank Group policies and standards, either

(i) through monetary fees or other compensation provided by the university or other sponsoring organization and accepted by the Bank, or

(ii) through academic credit that corresponds to the Bank’s fee schedule. As a result, participants in the World Bank Legal Internship Program are required to acquire adequate funding for the duration of their internships.

Health Insurance: Legal World Bank Interns are required to provide documentation of current major international medical insurance coverage, as they are liable for their own medical insurance and any costs associated with accidents and/or illnesses that occur during the internship period.

A competitive selection process will be used to choose the World Bank Legal Interns. The World Bank Group offers equitable employment opportunities.

Onboarding: The World Bank Legal Vice Presidency will arrange a quick onboarding session for the new cohort at the start of the summer, fall, and spring internship programs.

Performance Reviews: The World Bank is not required to give performance reviews of those who have taken part in its legal internship program.
