The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest international scholarship program (first given in 1902) and allows exceptional young people from all around the world to study at the University of Oxford.

Eligible nations Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, So Tomé and Principe, and Togo are among the nations whose nationals are allowed entry.

Benefits

Candidates chosen for this scholarship program in Europe will be covered by the following:

  • All tuition, college fees, the university application fee, a living stipend of £18,180 per year (£1,515 per month) for 2022–2023 to cover living costs and housing costs, one round-trip economy flight from the student’s home country to Oxford at the start of the scholarship, and one round-trip economy flight from Oxford to the student’s home country at its conclusion.
  • Scholars are given a settling-in allowance when they arrive at Oxford, and if they decide to switch to a second year of study there, they will once more receive financial aid to cover the cost of their visa renewal and subsequent IHS application.

Candidate eligibility requirements for this United Kingdom scholarship program are as follows.

You must be a national or citizen of one of the following nations: Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, the island of Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone, So Tomé and Principe, or Togo.
Education and residency requirements: For at least five of the previous 10 years, you must have resided in one or more of the nations mentioned above.

You must be at least the following age:
  • You must have reached the age of 18 to 24 on October 1, 2023, meaning that you were born between October 1, 1998, and October 2, 2005. OR, for students majoring in medicine, dentistry, pharmaceuticals, law, or engineering, to allow you to finish your professional internship.
  • You must be between the ages of 18 and 25 on October 1, 2023, which means you must have been born between October 1, 1997, and October 2, 2005, unless you are an older applicant who finished their first college degree later than typical.
  • You must have been born after October 1, 1996, which means you must be less than 27 on October 1, 2023. You must also have earned your first undergraduate degree on or after October 1, 2022.

Academic accomplishment:

  • By July 2024, you must have already finished an undergraduate degree (typically a bachelor’s degree) with a First-Class Honours degree or an equivalent that satisfies or exceeds the specific entry requirements of the full-time course you have chosen at the University of Oxford.

English language:

  • You must possess a high enough level of English to satisfy the University of Oxford’s English language competence standards.
  • Candidates will have a better chance of being admitted to Oxford if they have an Honors degree (or have taken an Honors year) from a university outside their country or if they have studied to Master’s level within their country, with the exception of those studying in Nigeria and Ghana and, for some countries, those studying medicine. If you need any additional guidance, please get in touch with your national secretary. Prior to submitting an application for the Rhodes Scholarship, candidates may want to think about submitting an application to The Mandela Rhodes Foundation, a sister organization of the Rhodes Trust (https://mandelarhodes.org/), in order to pursue an honors year or a master’s degree.
  • If you are unsuccessful in your initial application for a Rhodes Scholarship, you may only try again once (and it must be for the same constituency), provided you still match the eligibility requirements.
