Independent artists looking to investigate the inherent relationship between science and culture through creative storytelling can take advantage of funding, engagement activities, and other opportunities provided by The Sandbox Fund. The Sundance Institute Documentary Fund, in association with Sandbox Films, is in charge of running the program.

Eligibility & Application Process
- Nonfiction projects from the United States and other countries are welcome, with a preference for long documentaries.
- The Sandbox Fund application platform must be used to submit all applications.

The Fund has two unique application openings for its two grant cycles each year. Decisions about grants are often made in cooperation with Sandbox Films during the winter and summer. - Upcoming and current award cycles: 2023 June 12 – July 24 in the Fall Cycle 2024 Spring Cycle: Unknown Dates
- After the deadline, applicants will be notified in 5 months.
Grants
Projects at all levels of development, production, and post-production are supported by the fund. These are the typical grant amounts:
- Construction (up to $25,000)
- Production ($50,000 maximum)
- Post-Production ($50,000 maximum)
Creative Considerations
The Sandbox Fund will prioritize projects and creative narrative strategies that promote scientific diversity, particularly those that include characters, themes, or disciplines that expand and redefine what it means to be a scientist or to conduct science.
