The Kalinga Prize for the Popularization of Science, established by UNESCO, honors persons who have made outstanding contributions to the popularization of science and society. It is given to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the public understanding of science, research, and technology as writers, editors, lecturers, radio, television, or web program directors, or film producers. Winners of the UNESCO Kalinga Prize are aware of the potential of science, technology, and research to advance societal welfare, enrich national cultural heritage, and offer solutions to social issues on a local, regional, and international scale.

Purpose
The Kalinga Prize honors an individual, group, non-governmental organization (NGO), or other organization that has made a significant contribution to popularizing science or technology, assisted in interpreting these fields for the general public, or otherwise helped close the knowledge gap between science and society. All forms of media communication might be a part of this science popularization.
The person, organization, or NGO is required to be informed about how science, technology, and general research can be used to advance public welfare, amplify national cultural legacies, and find solutions to today’s pressing international problems.
Award
- The reward consists of a check for US$40,000, a certificate of achievement, and the silver UNESCO-Albert Einstein medal. The winner will also get the $5,000 cash award and the Kalinga Chair, which was established by the Indian government’s Department of Science and Technology.
- The laureate will be given the opportunity to visit India for a two to four week tour to meet with scientists and science communicators (travel and lodging will be covered by the Indian government).
- The Prize-winner will be given the tools she or he needs to get familiar with Indian society and culture, Indian academic and research institutions, and Indian business and economic growth. The winner will also be given the opportunity to visit Indian colleges and participate in scientific society gatherings in India, especially those of the Indian Science Congress Association.
- The winner of the prize will be required to give English-language lectures and participate in meetings while in India in order to discuss recent advancements in science and technology as well as the social, cultural, and educational effects of modern science.
Descriptions of the nominees
- Candidates must have significantly contributed to the public understanding of science. Individuals, institutions, other entities, or non-governmental organizations may receive the Prize;
- The candidate need not hold a degree in science;
- This award doesn’t recognize research;
- This award does not recognize formal education (at a school or university) or the creation of curricula for that field;
- If a piece of work is being honored that was created by two or three people, the prize will be given to them jointly. More than three people cannot split the prize.

- Deadline: July 30, 2023, at 12:00 a.m. CEST (Paris time).
- The World Science Day for Peace and Development in November 2023 will serve as the occasion for the 2023 award ceremony.
How to apply:
To access the application form, applicants must first create an account. Please be aware that access may not be granted right away.
The governments of Member States should nominate candidates after consulting with their National Commissions, as well as any non-governmental organizations (NGO) with UNESCO that are involved in the field of science communication. To get their application approved, individual candidates should get in touch with the Permanent Delegation of their Member State to UNESCO, their National Commission for UNESCO, or the pertinent NGO.
Self-nominations that lack the proper nomination letter will not be taken into consideration.
Each application must contain the following materials (in English or French), whether it is made by an individual, an organization, a member state, or both.
- a letter of recommendation submitted to the UNESCO Director-General from the Member State’s government, the National Commission for UNESCO, or a non-profit organization that is officially affiliated with UNESCO;
- a summary of the candidate’s qualifications and accomplishments;
- a list of the initiatives taken and/or outcomes of the work on science popularization, publications, and other significant supporting materials offered for consideration;
- An analysis of how the actions and work submitted have aided in achieving the prize’s goal.
