In November 2023, the Africa Prize will welcome its tenth class. Since 2014, the program has provided rigorous business training and ongoing support through the Africa Prize alumni network to more than 130 entrepreneurs in 20 different African countries. More than 70% of the alumni’s engineering and tech companies are currently profitable. Together, the graduates of the Africa Prize have raised more than USD 14 million in grants and equity funds and established over 3,600 jobs, with nearly half of them going to women.

In order to address societal issues like access to power, food and water security, coping with climate change, and enhancing telecommunications, education, financial services, healthcare, and other public infrastructure, the Africa Prize aims to support the crucial role that engineers play in this field. The Africa Prize has received applications from 37 different African countries as of this writing, and 20 countries contributed shortlisted applicants. This shows how rich and diversified the engineering talent in sub-Saharan Africa is.
Benefits
- The Africa Prize winner earns £25,000, and the three runners-up each receive $10,000.
- A special package of support is provided to up to 16 shortlisted candidates over the course of eight months to help them grow their businesses.
- This support includes in-depth and specialized business training, sector-specific engineering mentoring, communications support, opportunities for pitching, and access to the Academy’s network of well-known, accomplished engineers and business experts in the UK and across Africa.
Over the past 10 years, the Academy’s judges, mentors, and expert reviewers have donated over 2,500 hours of help, valued at about USD 1.5 million, and as the alumni’s businesses grow, they continue to directly promote the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Up to 16 shortlisted candidates will get special privileges from the Africa Prize to assist their business grow, including:
- access to industry-specific engineering mentoring as well as business and technical skills.
- custom media coverage and communications assistance.
- Customized training program lasting eight months.
- access to the network of renowned engineers and business authorities in the UK and Africa maintained by the Academy.
- the chance for finalists to display their invention in front of an audience at the Africa Prize showcase event.
- monetary awards of up to £25,000.
Applications for the Africa Prize
Applications are now being accepted for the 2024 Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation.
- The online grants application process must be used to submit all applications. Before submitting their application, applicants should make sure they have read the advice notes, the FAQ, and the eligibility sections.
- Web-based grants program You will be requested to create an account on our Grant Management System (GMS) before you can submit an application for the Africa Prize. After logging into GMS, please choose the ‘Africa Prize for Engineering Innovation 2023/2024’ option to begin your application.
The deadline for submissions for the Africa Prize 2024 is Tuesday, July 25, 2023 at 4:00 PM BST.
