The Western Union Foundation Accelerator and Fellowship 2023 is now accepting applications. The Watson Institute-powered Western Union Foundation Fellowship Program is intended for budding businesspeople and community activists who come from and work in severely underserved refugee and forcibly displaced areas. This life-changing 16-week program seeks to provide social entrepreneurs with the knowledge and experiences they need to improve their access to job possibilities. Additionally, participants will have the chance to obtain seed money, establish a community, navigate the shifting field of social impact work, and make a significant and long-lasting contribution to their local communities.

Part-time and virtual, the Western Union Foundation Fellowship will run from October 2, 2023, through February 15, 2024.

Benefits

Assistance Offered to Fellows:

  • Seed Funding: Selected Western Union Foundation Fellows will each receive $45,000 in seed funding*, which will be distributed based on their performance and impact throughout the course of the Fellowship.
  • Training and skill development: Expert-led instruction in the knowledge and abilities necessary to expand access to economic opportunity, integrate into communities as leaders and entrepreneurs, and enhance one’s career.
  • Access to prominent businesspeople, subject matter experts, international alumni, and the Western Union Foundation network to receive mentoring, direction, and support throughout the program.
  • Basecamp: A two-day workshop aimed at assisting budding entrepreneurs and leaders from the communities of our Fellows in coming up with solutions, creating business models, and convincingly presenting their organizations to an outside audience, offers the chance to increase and elevate community impact.
  • Summit: At the end of the Fellowship, Fellows participate in a high-profile Summit event where they share their experiences, accomplishments, and impacts with mentors and staff of the Western Union Foundation from across the world.

Eligibility

  • Who You Are: You are a businessperson or community leader from a highly marginalized community who works with refugees and people who have been forcibly displaced all over the world.
  • What You Do: As a leader of a community project or early-stage social impact venture with a track record of entrepreneurship, impact, and leadership in their community.
  • Where You Make an Impact: Priority will be given to applicants who are citizens of or are employed in the following nations: United States, United Kingdom, Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, India, Lithuania, Nigeria, Philippines, and Uganda
  • What You’re Looking For: To improve your leadership abilities and venture impact, you’re looking for access to funding options, expert-led entrepreneurial training, and a broad network of mentorship.
  • What You Will Achieve: With the Watson Institute team’s assistance, you will develop a roadmap for expanding and enhancing the impact of your work. Additionally, you will have an effect by leading a Basecamp workshop and training for your stakeholders and members of your community. To accomplish this, you will receive a stipend, a playbook, and team assistance.

Thanks to the assistance of the Western Union Foundation, this program has been completely supported. The expected weekly time commitment for the program, which is hosted electronically, is between 5-8 hours.

Application

  • Fill out the online form.
  • Starting on July 7th, 2023, the admissions committee will assess applications on a rolling basis.
  • A 20-minute Zoom interview will be offered to qualified candidates. The hiring process will start on July 10, 2023.
  • For a final examination, the most compelling applicant profiles will be provided to the external admissions committee.
  • Midway through August, the admissions team will start mailing out final acceptances and fellowship awards.
  • The Watson Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) must be read and signed in order to complete enrollment.
