The Canon Foundation-Kyoto University Japan-Africa Exchange Program began in 2018 and is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Kyoto University and the Canon Foundation in Europe (CFE). Highly qualified researchers in disciplines of study relevant to African Studies may apply for fellowships under the program. The program is designed to help both academics from Kyoto University’s partner institutions in Africa who wish to conduct research in Kyoto as well as fellows from KU who wish to conduct research in Africa. The fellowships are available between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, for a minimum of three months and a maximum of one year.

Eligibility
- At the time of application, applicants must be post-doctoral fellows or faculty members working at KU or KU’s partner institutions[1] with a minimum of an MA degree.
- African applicants are also qualified to apply for the program as long as they can demonstrate their current partnerships and submit one of the two reference letters they will receive from Kyoto University from their potential host.
- Travel and Stipend Expenses
- Successful applicants receive prorated financial assistance that ranges from 22,500 to 27,500 euros per year. Each successful candidate will be informed of the specific payment procedure by CFE, who will handle the payments directly.
Application Method
The application date is November 15, 2023. The applications are initially evaluated by KU, and then by CFE. Before the end of March of that year, the CFE Selection Committee will make its final judgments and transmit the results to applicants. Therefore, April 1 of the same year is the earliest date the fellowship might start. Please send the following files to the Africa Unit at Kyoto University (africaunit@kura.kyoto-u.ac.jp):
- Your research plan should have a title that is obvious and include the intended research’s start and finish dates. A rough cost estimate for living expenses, travel expenses, research expenses, insurance, and other expenses must be included in the research plan. (No more than 2 pages)
- two reference letters, each no longer than one page. One letter should be from a person qualified to remark on your academic accomplishments and professional experience, and the second letter should be a confirmation from your potential host, who can offer you access to research or workspace throughout the requested period.
- a copy of your resume
- a single copy of your PhD certificate or diploma from your highest level of education
- 1 self-portrait the size of a passport
- 1 chronological record of your academic or professional accomplishments, including the names of all authors, the location and year of publication, and page references.
