Internet Blackouts and Activism Fellowship in 2023

International experts will be featured in the program, which will also provide you with the information and abilities needed to create multi-stakeholder coalitions and responsive campaigns in front of and in response to internet shutdowns. The program will cover a range of topics, such as how to measure internet shutdowns technically, how to avoid internet shutdowns using widely used tools and techniques, how to create an advocacy campaign against internet shutdowns, how to work with the private sector, and when to use strategic litigation when shutdowns are illegal.

The course is mostly asynchronous, allowing you to watch course materials, participate in discussions, form relationships other fellows, and work with knowledgeable mentors. You will be required to create an action plan for advocating against the shutdown of the internet after six weeks of the program, and you will be given money to carry out an activity based on the skills you have gained through the fellowship and that is in line with your action plan.

Program Results

Fellows will have access to cash to carry out the projects listed in their action plans after the program is over. With this financial assistance, they might be able to plan community trainings, create awareness campaigns, create legal plans, localize resources for circumvention tools, or work with journalists to report on internet outages. The program seeks to promote genuine change and resilience in the face of internet outages by encouraging fellows to transform knowledge into practical actions.

Eligibility

  • Although you don’t need to have any prior knowledge of internet shutdowns, you should be aware of how they could negatively impact your community and what you can do to fight back against censorship and shutdowns.
  • From August through October 2023, you need to be able to devote 2.5 hours each week to the program. You can fit this time around other commitments because a lot of the program happens asynchronously, but you’ll have to put in the effort! A specific internet shutdown advocacy action, such as training, a research study, or a coalition-building exercise, should be something you can undertake from the end of the course until February 2024.
  • To take part in the course, you must frequently have access to a computer and the internet.
  • Although the discussion for the course will be held in English, the fundamental course materials will be available in Spanish, French, Arabic, Farsi, Swahili, Portuguese, and English. As a result, you should have some proficiency in writing and speaking English.
  • The prospect of developing new advocacy abilities and using them ought to excite you.

Application

The deadline for applications is July 15, 2023, although they will be taken on a rolling basis, so they encourage early submissions.
