The prizes honor outstanding policy-oriented research, assist the development of scholars’ research capacities in low- and middle-income countries, and provide funding for creative social development initiatives that aid marginalized people in developing nations. Each year’s yearly competition has a fresh, current theme. Through its awards program, GDN offers grants in two primary categories:

  • The Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD) is a competitive research grant program that seeks out and funds exceptional research proposals with the potential to be of the highest caliber and with clear policy implications for addressing development issues. Applications are evaluated by senior and later junior researchers. A Scientific and Technical Advisor who is chosen based on the theme of the research is also available to the research teams while they carry out their projects.
  • The Japanese Award for Most creative Development Project (MIDP) assists Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in low- and lower-income countries by providing a competitive award program to acknowledge the creative approach of their programs. The first-place winner is also eligible to compete for an additional award of up to US$ 200,000 through the Japan Social Development Fund in order to test their creative work on a broader scale.
  • Prior to their presentations at the conference, finalists in both categories receive training in communicating research and development.
