Investigative journalists and activists striving to successfully expose and combat the combined impact of misinformation and corruption on the climate issue are invited to apply for this special Fellowship by the 2024 Bertha Challenge.
The goal of this fellowship is to identify those responsible for the uncountable amounts of climate misinformation that are being propagated, as well as how that misinformation is being leveraged by politicians and corporations with a profit-driven objective.
Beginning in January 2024, the fifth Bertha Challenge will center on misinformation and the climate issue, supporting Bertha Fellows in their efforts to respond to the following query:
- How does misinformation manipulate and skew the effects of the climate problem created by humans?
- How do disinformation tactics support corporate interests, the status quo in politics, and enable more industrial corruption, all of which put profit above people and the environment?
- The Bertha Challenge 2024 is an appeal to journalists, activists, and other professionals who are committed to upholding the integrity of research and careful analysis in the fight against misinformation and its effects on the climate catastrophe.
Benefits
Fellowships provide:
- Each Bertha Fellow will receive annual compensation of up to USD $64,900, in line with their present or equivalent remuneration at the host organization. An investigative journalist should ideally work for a media institution, and an activist should join an NGO, community group, or social movement.
- A Project Fund of up to USD $10,000 for each Bertha Fellow to create a concluding work that answers the Bertha Challenge’s issue and is targeted towards a particular audience. For instance, this may be a collection of articles, movies, podcasts, video games, or drama shows. Applicants who are both activists and journalists will have the choice to combine their project funds to create larger-scale ventures.
- access to a Connect Fund with a maximum of USD $5,000 that is intended to promote cooperation between Fellows
- Regular online discussions on a variety of themes, including the Bertha Challenge question now being debated, techniques of study, ways to communicate discoveries to the news media, storytelling, popular education, and more.
- Regular virtual check-ins with Bertha staff and a group of Bertha Fellows provide peer and mentor support.
- Gaining exposure to pertinent partners both within and beyond the Bertha network through the global cohort of Bertha Fellows
- A gathering of Bertha Fellows from around the world before the Bertha Challenge.
- Investigative journalists and activists working together

Each of the USD $10,000 Project Funds available to joint candidates may be combined to work on a single, larger project.
Applications from lone activists and investigative journalists will also be taken into consideration.
