The objective is to create long-term networking amongst the participants in addition to dispersing theoretical and practical knowledge about journalistic profession.
2023 Topic: Reporting on Climate Change and Its Implications for Democracy
In addition to posing new difficulties to society, politics, and the economy, climate change also has an impact on journalism. Up until recently, climate journalism was only a minor topic, but editorial offices and media outlets are beginning to pay more attention to it.
One of the biggest challenges of the 20th century, climate change has an impact on every part of our life, including society, the economy, supply chains, employment, agriculture, health, food, and mobility. It is contributing to the strength and durability of democracies around the world by fostering fear, insecurity, social division, lack of freedom, migration, and poverty.
High-quality, fact-based, and objective journalism is particularly crucial in this situation. To effectively combat this serious issue, we must transform the way we report on climate change, its effects, and the social possibilities for action. In the meantime, arguments are being made that journalism needs to reform for this to occur. This is a result of journalism’s historical preference for covering events rather than processes, particularly in crisis reporting. However, finding the appropriate visuals for the process of climate change is a challenge for newsrooms frequently. Newsrooms are establishing climate editors and creating climate features in increasing numbers.
The organizers intend to create a vision for this new journalism with the participants based on successful models. They seek to assess the caliber of climate reporting in several European nations, study it from various angles, and develop standards for successful climate journalism while taking into consideration the circumstances in the various European home nations of the participants. Participants will be introduced to international investigative research on environmental hazards and impacts throughout one of the workshop’s days. The M100YEJ participants will summarize and discuss the workshop’s findings at the M100 Sanssouci Colloquium on September 14 in Potsdam.
