Deadline: the 16th of July, 2023 | Call for proposals on Restless Development for Young Researchers (Grant of €2,500)
Young researchers are welcome to submit proposals. As part of the Porticus Learning Partnership, Restless Development and Democracy Moves were each given a grant of 7,500 euros. The funding is intended to encourage youth-led action research in the fields of civic engagement and democratic governance. Three small-scale subgrants of 2,500 euros each will be given out over the following 18 months, with two grants going to implementation in Year 1 and one in Year 2.

The youth researcher will be essential to doing action research and producing youth-led insights on a particular issue pertaining to democratic government or civic participation. The goal of the research should be to produce novel insights and suggestions that may be applied to advocacy and change-making in order to pave the way for more just, long-lasting, and democratic futures. The researcher will also assist in the creation of insights for partners and donors on how to best support youth-led research and promote change.
Themes for Research
Based on discussions with the Democracy Moves network, learning questions created with Porticus, and the possibility to scale up the research as part of other funded initiatives, the following research themes have been identified:
- Intergenerational partnerships to combat the spread of authoritarianism
- Organizing against democratic deterioration
- Young people’s involvement in politics: effects and influence beyond elections
- Youth movements that are intersectional – effective support, gaps, and successful initiatives
- digital technology-related local risks and possibilities
- Impact of new media technologies, both positive and negative
Responsibilities
The young researcher that is chosen is anticipated to:
- To finalize the research approach and design, take part in three onboarding/training sessions.
- To protect the safety of everyone participating, attend a briefing on safeguarding and security.
- Make a weekly commitment to a 30-minute check-in call to discuss progress, get support, and get direction.
- Deliver a thorough research report or write-up that contains methodology, findings, analysis, and suggestions along with a brief overview of the literature.
- Join the research working group in an evaluation and learning debriefing session.
- Participate in gatherings where the research findings will be formally presented, working with Porticus and larger networks.

- Join the Democracy Moves Scholars Network for guidance and assistance on action research methodologies.
- Create informal forums for networking and sharing information to get more knowledge and assistance from other scholars.
- Obtain assistance from Democracy Moves and Restless Development throughout the research process.
Eligibility
- Supporting youth-led action research in the fields of democratic governance and civic engagement is open to young researchers.
- The primary themes should be addressed in proposals or connected to them.
Selection Standards
These standards will be used to evaluate proposals:
Relevance: Compatibility with the goals and themes of the research.
Clarity: The study question(s), objectives, and methodology must all be stated clearly.
Application of demonstrated feasibility:
An expression of interest and research proposal that addresses or connects with one of the core issues mentioned above are welcome from interested parties. The following details ought to be included in the proposal:
- Name, age, contact information, and relevant education and experience are examples of personal data.
- proposed subject of study: Give a clear explanation of the chosen research theme and give a quick rundown of the suggested research question(s) and goals.
- Methodology: Describe the methodology, procedures, and methods for gathering the research’s data.
- Provide a rough timetable for the research, outlining significant checkpoints and outputs.
- Impact and possible suggestions: Describe the research’s expected impact and how the results might be used to promote change.
- Ethical considerations: Describe how safety precautions and ethical standards will be addressed throughout the research procedure.
Note: The study proposal must be submitted by July 16, 2023, and it cannot be more than 4 pages.
