Are you a writer, content producer, performer, visual artist, or journalist who presents African stories that go beyond the clichés of famine, conflict, sickness, subpar governance, and corruption? Submit an application for the 2023 Africa No Filter Kekere Storytellers Fund.

The Kekere Storytellers Fund of Africa No Filter provides microgrants to up-and-coming storytellers who are already producing and publishing distinctive and fascinating content that offers new and alternative viewpoints of Africa, demonstrating an innovative, developing, and creative continent.

Africa No Filter created the Kekere Storytellers Fund to make sure that funding, which is scarce and infrequently available to emerging storytellers, gets to artists, journalists, and content producers who share their enthusiasm for telling better stories about Africa and telling stories about Africa better.

Funding

The cost ranges from $500 to $2000.

Eligibility

You have to

  • being a citizen of Africa or a member of the African Diaspora.
  • be younger than 35.
  • Be able to communicate in either French or English.
  • have a history of creating ground-breaking work that refutes stereotypes about your neighborhood, nation, or continent.
  • possess a minimum of two years of relevant job experience.
  • possess at least 5000 followers on Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
  • At least one of the following categories applies to you:
  • Creator of the media/content: Journalist, blogger, videographer, podcaster, author of both fiction and nonfiction, and photographer
  • Poet, musician, spoken word artist Dancer, Sculptor, Illustrator, Poet, Painter, and Animator.

They won’t think about:

Applications from the media.

  • Storytellers without a track record of creating material that challenges stereotypes about Africa.
  • money to purchase equipment (such as cameras, laptops, etc.).
  • the cost of hosting or going to an event (such as seminars, festivals, conferences, etc.).

Application

Until they have chosen 20 storytellers for the fund or until the end of the year, applications are accepted. Note that only submissions submitted in either English or French will be considered.
