Concerning the Organization
The African Economic Research Consortium was established in 1988 as a capacity-building organization to assist in the development of economic policies in sub-Saharan Africa. A small group of Africanists and academics first noticed the gap between economic policymaking and economic research in sub-Saharan Africa in the late 1980s, which led to the founding of AERC. Research findings that were applied to other economies didn’t always seem applicable to the African environment. Furthermore, when such results were available, they were all too frequently not applied.

Their worry developed into a full-fledged proposal, and they talked about a platform for pooling their skills and using them to strengthen sub-Saharan Africa’s capacity for economic policy. They made the decision to do action rather than just moaning about the issue. So, the AERC was established. The concept was relatively straightforward: create a framework for funding sound economic research on issues crucial to managing African economies and make existing knowledge available through skilled economists who could act as resource people for the researchers supported by the framework. They were able to persuade a single contributor at first, then a small number of donors, to endorse the notion.
Fellowship’s mission
A memorandum of understanding (MOU) for a beneficial collaborative cooperation was signed by The World Bank’s Africa Region Chief Economist’s Office (AFRCE) and the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). The relationship between the two organizations is centered on the recently launched AERC-World Bank visiting scholars program.
The collaboration’s goals are to:
- (i) strengthen AERC’s ability to advance economic policy research in Sub-Saharan Africa;
- (ii) strengthen AERC’s global connections in the fields of economic policy, academic research, and graduate training;
- (iii) deepen and broaden the policy impact of both AERC and AFRCE;
- (iv) improve the knowledge and output (especially publications and courses) of individual African researchers by giving them access to more comprehensive and superior information.
Three researchers from the AERC can travel to the World Bank each year as part of the visiting scholars program for a total of four months. Visiting scholars will be chosen from among AERC network members in accordance with predetermined criteria, such as the policies and processes of the World Bank.
The Signal
Researchers and academic staff in AERC’s network are invited to indicate their interest in taking part in the program for visiting scholars sponsored by the World Bank. The fellowship program will give participants the chance to spend time at the World Bank, work on their own economic development-related research projects, and collaborate with World Bank experts throughout the Africa Region.
Visiting Academics
The visiting scholars will be expected to participate in AFRCE team activities, attend AFRCE-led events, gain from AFRCE’s capacity-building initiatives, including working with academics and peers on World Bank Regional Flagship Studies to analyze data, engage with World Bank researchers, and fully utilize World Bank resources to: (i) revise their draft paper and submit it to the World Bank Working Paper Series and a ranking Journal; (ii) publish their research findings in peer-reviewed journals;
Eligibility
- AERC researchers, including those from the AERC collaborative PhD program (CPP), must be present.
must be working on an AERC research project that is at least in its interim or final stages; - and
The research objective of the World Bank’s Africa Region and the requirements for long-term African development must be relevant to the project.
How to Apply:
The applicant’s expression of interest should contain the following:
- a two-page interest declaration;
- a draft paper on a topic relevant to the World Bank’s Africa region’s research agenda and the development challenges facing Africa;
- The curriculum and course materials that you would like to enhance while visiting the World Bank, if you are a relevant course instructor; and
- a replica of your most recent curriculum vitae.
- The AERC Research Department must receive application materials via email at research@aercafrica.org. In the batch 2023/2024, up to 3 prizes may be announced.
Please send in your indication of interest by June 30, 2023, at the latest. Late applications won’t be taken into consideration.
