Additional 100 South African craft and design business owners are being sought by the Craft + Design Institute (CDI), who will provide them with specialized training, mentorship, and grant funds totaling R23,000 apiece. Women and young people (entrepreneurs under 35) made up a sizable portion of the program’s initial round of applicants, and the CDI is urging more women and young people nationwide to apply for help in this new intake of 100. The project intends to offer grant funding, market access, training, and mentorship to growth-oriented informal firms wanting to boost their sales, boost individual incomes, or hire more employees.
Benefits
- Each successful candidate may undergo a Business Assessment, which will aid in developing a roadmap.
- The facilitation of participation in the CDI’s market platform PEEK, the preparation of an intervention/action plan for the up to R23 000 award payments, and the specially developed training (through online learning) will all take place over the course of three months.Successful applicants will also receive administrative assistance worth R5,000 and a total airtime/data allocation worth R3,000.
- The program’s final six months are made up of mentorship, grant payments, financial reporting, and an extra six months of tracking to assess impact.
- The grant, which the business owners can use to pay for equipment and/or other professional services, will become available as they reach certain milestones.
- Successful participants will have to submit monthly reports to the CDI team and agree to take part in monitoring and evaluation procedures.
Eligibility
- open to artisans and designers in South Africa;
- The company must first fulfill the requirements of CDI’s definition of an informal business, specifically:
- Under R1 million in revenue plus one or more of the following:
- less than ten workers, not counting the firm owner.
- Despite not needing to be registered, a firm must at least have been operating for a year.
- UIF, SARS, and PAYE registration are not requirements for business. However, if they have employees, they must be aware of and in compliance with Department of Labour rules such the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
- Payroll, formal employee contracts, and audited financial records are not requirements for business. However, you must present and demonstrate some sort of accounting system, such as bank account statements, cash flow statements, and/or books detailing all business activities, which should be supported by a police affidavit.
- Owner of a business makes less than the national minimum wage of R4,000 per month.
- The unofficial business must possess, be willing to perform, or obtain:
- Complete each and every business development module that is needed.
- To sell their goods, users must register on the PEEK market platform.
- Participate actively in the mentoring program.
- a laptop or smartphone, or the ability to buy one, in order to fulfill program criteria.
- Organize your finances and submit monthly financial reports.
- must be willing to open a bank account or have one already.
- Acceptance of the Yoco speed points or the TryFetch API as proof of turnover.
- Create an intervention plan to use the grant money, and then report on the projects and spending that are related to the deadlines and set business goals.
