African journalists that write about the SFA Foundation’s three thematic focus areas of health, environment, and agriculture will be awarded the ASJA. In order to combat the misinformation and distortion that can characterize conversations about science, particularly on social media, the awards feature a category for scientists to elevate trustworthy science voices.
A workshop on science journalism will take place prior to the awards’ presentation, and science editors and those who made the shortlist for the prize will participate. Two of the award winners will also have the chance to spend three to seven days at a partner institution learning more in-depth information about a particular scientific field from experts at a partner academic or research institution in their nation or region.
Categories and Awards
- The journalist whose reporting best illustrates the value of science or sparks discussions that lead to structural or policy reforms that have benefited Africans’ quality of life will get the Innovative Science Journalist award. There will be a $3,000 award.
- A news organization whose coverage of science is influencing the public’s perspectives will be given the title of Science Journalism Media Organization of the Year. There is a $5,000 reward.
- The award for Best News Story or Feature will go to a journalist who ingeniously sheds light on contemporary scientific concerns and whose constant reporting helps to increase public understanding of problems with agriculture, climate change, and/or health. The award is $2,000 in value.
- To encourage more editors to cover science, the Innovator Editors/Editors Award will be granted to editors whose newsrooms have supported it. There will be a $2,500 prize.
- Champion of Science: Here, scientists and innovators will be honored for using online and offline media outlets to increase awareness of their work and research on the continent. There will be a $1,500 prize.
- A significant pan-African science conference will award winners trophies in addition to monetary awards. One or two of the winners will have the chance to spend three days to a week learning more about a particular science topic from experts at a partner academic or research institution in their nation or region. For a story that is published after spending time at the partner institution, a pitch fee will be paid.
