The political process to combat climate change is centered on the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The UNFCCC secretariat supports the Convention, its Kyoto Protocol, and the historic Paris Agreement through a number of initiatives, such as providing important and administrative assistance to Parties’ meetings and ensuring that promises are carried out. It is a vibrant group attempting to address one of the most important environmental concerns of our day in a politically charged climate.

The UNFCCC secretariat is beginning a new round of the Capacity Award Programme to Advance Capabilities and Institutional Training in One Year (CAPACITY) Fellowship Program with funding from the Government of Italy in order to strengthen the capacity of negotiators and, as a result, raise the level of implementation of the Paris Agreement.

In order to combat climate change, Small Island Developing States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs) can benefit from the CAPACITY Fellowship Program, which develops local professional skills by:

A. Fostering a network of experts who can offer original and creative solutions to climate change issues; B. Supporting innovative analytical work on climate change within the context of sustainable development; C. Promoting the leadership potential of young and promising professionals in their fields.

The target audience for the program comprises of mid-career professionals who are already employed by the government, who are citizens of and employed by a SIDS or LDC Party. Although fellowships are given to specific people, the development/training that is required, as indicated below, must take place in the context of the organization that the applicant works for. The training must aid in the capacity development of the organization.

Requirements

Required educational background

Master’s degree or equivalent in communications, engineering, the scientific sciences, business administration, the social sciences, international relations, or a comparable field from an advanced university.
The advanced university degree may be substituted with a first-level university degree and two more years of relevant experience.


Experience Necessary:
It would be ideal if you have two (2) years of relevant professional working experience in intergovernmental administration, which would have included coordinating and liaising with numerous senior level stakeholders.
An advantage would be having knowledge of sustainable development and climate change.


Language abilities needed:
Desired: spoken and written English with ease. understanding of a second UN official language.
Individuals who are currently working by a governmental organization (national, regional, provincial, or local), including educational institutions, research institutes, and ministries, are eligible to apply for the fellowship program.

b. Have citizenship in an eligible LDC or SIDS countries (only UN members).

c. Must not be older than 40 at the time the notice of the fellowship opportunity expires;

To ensure gender balance in the selection of candidates, the secretariat will only take into account candidates from SIDS or LDC Parties.

Please be aware:

  1. This program is not geared for students and does not fund expenses associated with pursuing an advanced degree, such as conducting field research for a PhD.
  2. The UNFCCC will confirm that your application was received. Only those applicants, however, who have been assured of an interview, will be informed of the results of the selection procedure.
  3. The total monthly compensation is EUR 4500.
  4. The return trip to Bonn will be organized by the UNFCCC Secretariat.
