Statelessness served as the theme of the inaugural International Art Contest for Minority Artists, which was held in 2022. You may access the winners’ list and catalogue here.

The Second Edition

The Second Edition will honor minority artists who have, via their work, exposed, investigated, and/or addressed issues connected to intersectional forms of prejudice. It strives to increase public awareness of the human rights of those who are members of minorities and experience multiple forms of discrimination.

The International Art Competition 2023 also supports prior initiatives by OHCHR to develop collaboration with Freemuse and UNHCR in areas related to minority rights as well as the commemoration of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights’ 75th anniversary. Progress in addressing all types of prejudice and the inclusion of minorities can be accelerated by strengthened cooperation among UN Agencies and Entities. The International Art Contest for Minorities Working on Intersectionality Themes, Second Edition, aims to empower people who are members of minority groups who have made a commitment to combat intersectional forms of prejudice. In addition to educating them about their legal options and human rights, OHCHR and its partners want to raise awareness of the need to combat intersectional marginalization, including in light of the numerous States’ discriminatory laws, policies, and practices.

Requirements

Up to five pieces of artwork by minorities that address intersectionality and intersecting forms of oppression are invited.
The Minority Artists Awards on Intersectionality Themes are open to artists who self-identify as members of a minority. All works of art, including but not limited to photography, painting, video, installation, drawing, sculpture, etc., that have as their theme the intersectional experiences of minorities are eligible. However, it is necessary to submit a virtual presentation of the artwork(s) to OHCHR in a digital format due to practical considerations.

Awards

The Judging Panel will present four $1,000 awards, one of which will be designated as a Minority Youth Artist Award for artists between the ages of 18 and 35. Early November 2023 will see a public announcement of the winners.

Selection Standards

At a Grand Ceremony held in Geneva in November 2023, the prize winners will be announced. A visual display and a catalogue showcasing the honored artists’ works will be unveiled in public on this occasion.
