The Pulitzer Center Data Journalism Grants 2023 are now accepting applications. The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting is accepting submissions for ground-breaking, data-driven journalism projects that highlight underreported problems. The center is a nonprofit that encourages independent, international media. All newsrooms and independent journalists in the United States and abroad are eligible for this opportunity.

They are interested in projects that would make use of cutting-edge data approaches and encourage cross-border or interstate collaboration among newsrooms. They support projects that leverage cutting-edge data mining techniques, including machine learning, natural language processing, as well as spatial data analysis, satellite imaging, drones, and sensors. These proposals push the boundaries of data collection and analysis.

They are looking for engaging data-driven storytelling that can influence public opinion and hold the powerful accountable. This storytelling should be based on original data collection, analysis, and powerful visuals.

Grant

They are open to financing numerous projects each year and will take into account projects of any size and complexity. In the past, rewards for data journalism project support have typically ranged from $10,000 to $20,000, however they may be more or less depending on the situation.

Eligibility

open to journalists worldwide including U.S. citizens.
They are accepting submissions from staff journalists, independent data journalists, and teams of newsrooms working together on a data project. They want to make sure that individuals with all experiences and viewpoints have the ability to create data journalism.
They strongly encourage submissions from newsrooms and journalists who cover a wide range of social, racial, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and economic backgrounds.

Application

The following information must be provided in order to apply:

No more than 250 words should be used to describe the planned project, distribution strategy, and publication schedule. They see proposals more favorably if they are accompanied by a letter or letters of interest or support from editors or publishers.
Methodology: Include your method for fact-checking or independently verifying the data that will be used in your reporting and describe your approach to data collection, analysis, and reporting. (The publishing partner may be tasked with fact-checking and data verification; however, clearly describe the procedure.)
a rough budget estimate including a cost breakdown at the very least. Include any associated travel, software, hardware, satellite, or GIS costs. Stipends for journalists or team members who work for newsrooms or are compensated by publishers should not be included. Include consultancy fees in your budget if you are a journalist working with a data designer and/or data visual specialist.
Three samples (links) of your published work, or the work of another member of your project team. Infographics, data visualizations, and/or data-driven tales are a few examples.
three references from the workforce. These could be letters of recommendation or contact details.
a duplicate of your curriculum vitae or CV.
Applications may optionally contain a more thorough explanation of the idea, however this will only be taken into consideration as an optional addition. The methodology and the 250-word summary are the two most crucial sections of the proposal.

Any size and scope of a project will be considered.
