The OPEC Fund Annual Award for Development 2023 is now accepting applications. Outstanding achievements to sustainable development are recognized with the OPEC Fund Annual Award for Development (AAD). The prize, which was established in 2006, honors a distinct subject matter each year that is especially pertinent to international development.

The OPEC Fund will offer its 2023 AAD to a project partner working on the intersection of gender equality, development, and climate action in honor of the crucial role that women play in the global development agenda. Realistic contributions to SDGs 5—Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls—and 13—Take urgent action to mitigate climate change and its effects—are of special relevance.

Eligibility

Nominator
  • The party making the nomination ought to be intimately familiar with the operations of the nominated organization.
  • The person making the nomination cannot be one of the nominated organization’s employees or another person who receives payment for their services. Board members of the group being nominated are eligible to run, so long as they are not being compensated for their work.
  • A family member or employee of the nominated organization is not permitted to make the nomination.
  • The founding member of the organization being nominated need not be the nominating party.
  • The candidate cannot be a board or staff member of the OPEC Fund.
Nominee
  • The candidate must be a recognized nongovernmental charitable organization that works in a nation or nations other than the OPEC Fund’s 12 member nations (Algeria, Ecuador, Gabon, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela).
  • Candidates must be legitimate businesses that have been around for three years or more.
  • Candidates must have at least two years’ worth of audited financial statements.
  • The nominees’ most recent audited financial statements must show expenditures of at least US$1,000,000.
  • The nominees cannot be regional branches of parent organizations, particular programs inside organizations, university-based initiatives, or groups with financial backing.
Evaluation Standards

The accomplishments and future objectives of the nominee should be highlighted in the nomination letter. Performance from the past and the present should both be considered. When describing a nominee’s work, keep the following things in mind:

  • Extraordinary efforts to promote development that strengthens women’s rights while combating climate change.
  • a proven track record of success, notably in the creation, promotion, and/or execution of development strategies that support climate change and gender equality in the global south.
  • Evidence of accomplishments accomplished and their sustainability into the future, as well as a convincing strategy for making a long-lasting influence.
  • demonstrating successful collaborations by carrying out projects in conjunction with a variety of stakeholders, such as governments, donors, and civil society organizations
  • a demonstration of how money from other donors was used wisely.
  • technological or programmatic innovation.
  • Strong project and financial management must be shown, including monitoring and recording pertinent development results like the number of beneficiaries who are gender-disaggregated and measurements of the changes made.
  • A project plan that adheres to the aforementioned thematic focus areas and concepts is required for the use of AAD grant funds. The project’s goals, the suggested strategy, the proposed actions, and the anticipated outcomes will all be taken into account with special attention.

Nomination

Online registration is required for nominations. Following a nomination, the OPEC Fund will get in touch with the organization being nominated directly to request any additional information and necessary supporting materials. The OPEC Fund may also get in touch with the nominee for the same reason.

The following steps are part of the nomination process:
  • Step 1: Download the nomination form .
  • Step 2: Nominating parties send nomination forms in English to AnnualAward@opecfund.org using the specified email address. A senior person (such as the CEO, vice president, or head of operation) must sign nominations and they must state the reasons for the nomination. Additionally, supporting documents must be submitted. Only one organization may be proposed by the nominating party each calendar year. The AAD nomination deadline is May 12, 2023.
  • Step 3: The OPEC Fund gets in touch with the nominee and/or the party making the nomination to request more details and supporting documentation.
  • Step 4: The OPEC Fund AAD Committee evaluates the nominations in accordance with the previously described standards and recommends acceptance to the OPEC Fund Management.
  • Step 5: The OPEC Fund notifies the chosen nominee and the party that submitted the nomination of its choice in writing, together with the conditions for using the AAD award funds.
  • Step 6: The OPEC Fund designs and executes a targeted communication campaign in collaboration with the nominee after receiving confirmation that the AAD has been accepted and that the awardee has agreed to the conditions of using its proceeds. The nominee must agree to one or more video interviews with the OPEC Fund and certain journalists for this purpose, as well as give written and audio-visual evidence of its activity.
  • Step 7: On June 20, 2023, in Vienna, Austria, at the OPEC Fund Development Forum, the OPEC Fund Annual Award for Development will be presented. The ceremony is open to both the nominee and the nominating group.
  • Step 8: A press conference organized by the OPEC Fund in Vienna, Austria, may take place either before or after the ceremony. Award recipients can be required to make brief speeches and communicate with the media. The OPEC Fund will work with the winning teams to create the necessary audio-visual content and endorsements in advance of the event.
  • Step 9: Prior to receiving the AAD and within a year of receiving it, the nominee must present the AAD on its website and give the OPEC Fund updated audio-visual materials and work references. Within two years of receiving the AAD, the nominee must also submit a report to the OPEC Fund outlining the major accomplishments related to the AAD. The nominee must also participate in a special event (TBD) to discuss lessons learned from recent successes and/or contribute to one of the OPEC Fund’s publications on a topic connected to the prize.
