The Internet Society Foundation Research Program 2023 application period is currently open. The Research Program of the Internet Society Foundation fosters international research partnerships that expand knowledge of the Internet and its benefits to all.
The research must address a practical issue and be openly published in order to be freely available to the scientific community. Such research is the focus of this program. When a study has been approved as ethical and in accordance with local legislation by an appropriate organization, the Foundation will finance research involving human or animal subjects. The project’s principal investigator is in charge of acquiring these qualifications.

Areas of emphasis
The subjects covered in subsequent proposals and statements of interest should relate to one of the following thematic areas:
- Internet greening: The environment and climate change have an impact on the Internet, as well as the other way around. The Internet can be resilient and will last for future generations if we have a critical knowledge of this impact. An evaluation of the Internet’s energy use as well as the pollutants and garbage it produces may be included in this awareness. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, it might take into account the facilitative influence the Internet has on other industries. It might look into how weather extremes and climate change affect connectivity and pose a danger to online infrastructure. These and other concerns regarding the environmental impact of the Internet and the sustainability measures required for it and the earth to thrive should be made more widely known through research on “greening” the internet.

The Internet Economy: New and developing Internet-based activities have the potential to upend existing economic systems and create unpredictably uncertain economic futures. This uncertainty might change if we have a solid understanding of the interactions that form the Internet Economy. Understanding how the Internet alters conventional notions of competition, production, and consumption of products and services may be helpful in enabling everyone to participate fairly and profitably in an increasingly changing global economy. Research proposals with an emphasis on the Internet Economy should provide an examination of previous or current ecosystems that sheds light on the future of the Internet and any markets that it is dependent upon.
A trustworthy internet is one that constantly satisfies users’ demands for information and services. To be entirely resilient, reliable, accountable, and secure, the internet must meet all of these criteria. Regardless of whether those expectations are legitimate or not, the Internet only earns people’s trust when it lives up to their expectations. Additionally, there are multiple layers in a network, thus it is possible that some components of the Internet be trustworthy while others are not. For instance, even if the application layer is dependable or safe, the infrastructure, logic, or content itself could have flaws. Research that addresses the concept of a trustworthy internet should make an effort to clarify how users’ expectations are met or not on the internet and what should or should not be done about it.

- Digitally decolonizing the web They accept that industrial societies, by their very nature, exploited resources from lands taken from Indigenous people and communities around the world, and that these societies were crucial to the birth of the Internet. They acknowledge that the Internet may spread injustice and inequality, possibly more so when it is not designed to be inclusive of all people and its designers are not diverse. They acknowledge that the Internet has the capacity to obliterate languages and cultures as well as invalidate and render obsolete conventional methods of information production and knowledge sharing. However, it is not need to. Instead, restorative, freeing, and transformational acts that connect the past to a more just future or draw individuals on the periphery of society closer to the center can be carried out via the Internet. These activities and other approaches to creating an internet for everyone should be investigated in research on decolonizing the internet.
Funding
The program includes two financing tiers:
Independent researchers can submit grant requests for up to $200,000 USD. Grant management, including all reporting obligations during the grant’s life, shall be the sole responsibility of the person named as the primary investigator on the project, to whom grants will be directly awarded.
Institutions and organizations are eligible to apply for funding of up to $500,000. Depending on fiscal year financing, one or more awards in each of the theme areas are anticipated.
Eligibility
- In addition to peer-reviewed publications, patents, academic or independently published work in the pertinent field, independent researchers should hold a postgraduate research degree (PhD, Masters).
- Public research organizations should have 501c3 status or something comparable, and they should share the Foundation’s goals. Institutions in the private sector are not eligible for funding.
Selection Standards
It is advised that researchers submit a complete application for the Independent Program Review Committee to consider. The following criteria will be used to choose the winning entries:
- Is the research relevant to a theme that the Foundation has?
- The research is it novel?
- Is the research put to use?
- Is the research team-based?
- Twice a year, the IPRC convenes to discuss ideas. In April 2023, the following Research cycle will begin.
Application
Two application rounds, in April and September, were added to the procedure in 2023. Applications will be accepted for the April cycle between April 12 and May 31. The statement of interest was also eliminated from the procedure. Applicants must now use Fluxx to submit a single application.
