Expires on June 25, 2023 | 2023 Breakthrough Junior Challenge (Win $250,000) for Students Worldwide
For the Breakthrough Junior Challenge 2023, applications are now being accepted. Every year, students from all across the world compete in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, a competition designed to spark their scientific imagination.
International students between the ages of 13 and 18 are asked to produce and submit creative videos (with a maximum runtime of two minutes) that vividly illustrate a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics, or mathematics. The ability of the student to convey intricate scientific concepts in interesting, illuminating, and creative ways is evaluated in the submissions. The Breakthrough Prize Foundation, which was established by Julia and Yuri Milner as part of their Giving Pledge to assist science and the dissemination of scientific ideas, is in charge of organizing the Challenge.

Challenge
- You get it. You’ve grasped an important scientific theory, concept or principle. Now can you share your insight?
- An inventive video can get across complex material that would take pages of text to communicate. To take part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, create a short video (2:00 – two minutes max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields:
- Physics
- Mathematics
- Life Sciences
- Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.
Prizes
In the event that your film is selected as the Winner, you will get:
- $250,000 Post-secondary scholarship
- $50,000 Prize for your teacher
- $100,000 Breakthrough Science Lab
- You are eligible to participate in this year’s Challenge if you are:
- 13 years of age or older on April 1, 2023, at 12:01 AM PDT (West Coast, USA).
- Not older than 18 (but not quite 19) as of October 1, 2023, 11:59 PM PDT (West Coast USA).
- Any person of those ages, including homeschoolers, students with disabilities, and students from all around the world, is welcome to submit work in English.
Judging Standards
The following criteria will be used to evaluate the videos:
- Engagement
- Illumination
- Creativity
- Difficulty
