Are you a young activist hoping to have a positive influence on your neighborhood? The Youth Solidarity Fund (YSF) of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) is accepting applications from youth-led groups for its 2023 iteration. Organizations working to advance peace and social inclusion via better communication, respect, and cooperation across boundaries, cultures, faiths, and beliefs are eligible to apply.
The Young Social Fund (YSF) will provide seed money of up to USD 25,000 through a competitive review procedure for the implementation of exceptional and significant projects that involve intercultural and interreligious dialogue and are in line with the mandate and objective of UNAOC. The YSF only funds initiatives that are wholly created and run by young people and that benefit everyone in society, but particularly young people.

YSF was founded in 2008 in response to international demands for action from young civil society leaders on the necessity of setting up financial channels for youth-led groups. 73 youth-led organizations from more than 40 different nations have received funding and support from YSF as of this writing.
In its tenth edition, YSF continues to offer comprehensive support to youth-led organizations, with a focus on the contribution of youth to fostering peace, respect for other religions and cultures, preventing violent extremism, addressing the root causes of intolerance, stigma, and discrimination, and combating hate speech and its effects on young people. By involving young people in creating inclusive and peaceful societies, it supports the implementation of numerous international policy frameworks.
Requirements:
- organizations run by young people that are registered and operating in one of the eligible nations; organizations run by young people that are registered and whose programs are wholly created and managed by young people.
- Qualification standards for youth organizations:
- Youth groups must meet the same standards as other UN System partners in terms of accountability, openness, and the absence of any kind of discrimination.
The following requirements must all be met by youth organizations applying in order to be considered:
- Be youth-led: Women and men between the ages of 18 and 35 have the majority of positions and positions of decision-making within the organization;
- be a non-profit, non-governmental organization (apart from national youth councils) authorized to operate as a trust, foundation, association, or charity in the country where it is based;
- Be formally registered and in operation in one of the aforementioned nations for at least two years prior to the deadline for applications with financial base and project execution (starting operations in April 2021 or earlier);
- possess a democratic system of governance and decision-making, which incorporates participatory procedures when establishing priorities and policies;
- possess the capacity to show proper and regular monitoring, evaluation, and record-keeping of their actions, including financial reports and project evaluation reports;
- Possess no allegiance to or associations with violent ideologies or hostility toward any one nation, culture, religion or belief system, ethnic group, gender, or other group; Have a gender viewpoint or balance reflected in their personnel, beneficiaries, and activities; and
- did not get help from the Intercultural Innovation Hub or financing under previous YSF iterations.
- Project types:
- Outstanding initiatives encouraging intercultural and interreligious communication are given seed money by the Youth Solidarity Fund. Grants of up to USD 25,000 are given for the execution of chosen projects that show creative and successful methods for intercultural and/or interreligious interaction and advance the goals of UNAOC.
Particularly appreciated are proposals related to the adoption of the following frameworks and/or policies:
- the implementation of Resolutions 2250 (2015), 2419 (2018), and 2535 (2020) of the United Nations Security Council on Youth, Peace, and Security in relation to interreligious and intercultural dialogue;
- projects that encourage intercultural and interreligious communication as a preventative measure in order to help the implementation of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Plan of Action to Prevent Violent Extremism;
- projects that address the increasing stigma and discrimination against young people and their communities that has been made worse by the epidemic and that promote the implementation of the United Nations Comprehensive Response to COVID-19;
- Projects that encourage respect for various religions and cultures, the right of people to practice their faith in safety and peace, and attempts to counteract extremist ideologies and narratives promote the execution of the United Nations Plan of Action to Safeguard Religious Sites;
- projects that focus on the problems and how they affect young people in order to help the implementation of the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action against Hate Speech.
- Young people from a variety of backgrounds are the focus of the YSF’s supported initiatives, including students, marginalized youth, minorities, kids living in rural or urban areas, youth involved in conflict or the aftermath of conflict, artists, and activists.
The youth-led organizations use innovative techniques to shatter stereotypes, enhance intercultural understanding, and advance a culture of peace, such as:
- educational initiatives, such as one-day awareness-raising events, weeklong trainings, peer-education activities, summer camps, the development of instructional materials and tools, and the establishment of networks of student leaders and youth organizations;
- Using the arts and sports to foster intercommunity understanding, address conflict nonviolently, and raise public awareness of the risks of extremism, radicalization, and sectarianism;
- campaigns in the media and on social media, film production for advocacy objectives, and radio shows to spread messages of peace and tolerance;
- A society can transform for the better by using innovative environments that encourage intercultural discourse, interfaith understanding, the exchange of experiences, and mutual learning.

- Organizations interested in applying may do so at http://apply.unaoc.org.
The application package must contain the following and be submitted through the online application system accessible at http://apply.unaoc.org/ in order to be deemed complete and valid.
- application form that has been filled out and approved by the applicant’s organization;
- a duplicate of the applicant’s organization’s registration certificate;
- a duplicate of the applicant’s organization’s statutes and bylaws;
- an organizational chart that shows the ages of the organization’s top decision-makers;
- a maximum of one page long biography of the current executive or managing director that includes their birthdate;
- a maximum of two pages long resume or CV for the project coordinator;
- a photo or image of the passport identity page for the project organizer. Upload the project coordinator’s national identification card if they don’t have a passport.
- You must adhere to the word/character limits for each question on the application form. Words and characters are automatically counted by the application system.
