The UN OHCHR Fellowship Programme 2023 for People of African Descent is now accepting applications. People of African descent who are actively working to advance the rights of people of African descent can enroll in the Fellowship program for persons of African descent, which provides intense human rights training. The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva hosts it once a year.

The fellowship program offers the following opportunities to participants:

  • learn about and get a deeper grasp of the UN’s human rights system, the international framework to combat racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and associated intolerance, as well as intersecting concerns with a focus on persons of African descent;
  • hone abilities in creating project ideas, giving presentations, and submitting data to mechanisms for human rights;
  • learn about human rights processes first-hand;
  • Visit with a variety of actors.

Benefits

For the duration of the program, each fellow is entitled to a round-trip economy class ticket from their home country to Geneva, basic health insurance, and a stipend to cover basic living expenses.

Eligibility

  • The nominee must be a Diaspora-based person of African heritage.
  • The applicant must have at least 4 years of experience working on issues affecting the rights of people of African descent.
  • A letter establishing the candidate’s status from a group working on issues affecting individuals of African descent or minority rights must be submitted.
  • The candidates must be able to participate for the entire program’s runtime. The chosen fellows will be required to take part in various activities and adhere carefully to the program.

Application

Applicants are asked to provide the following files to ohchr-africandescentfellowship@un.org in a single email:

  • an academic resume
  • An application form that has been filled out, signed, and scanned in one file (English | French | Spanish).
  • A 500-word maximum personal statement outlining the applicant’s reasons for applying and how he or she plans to advance the rights and interests of persons of African origin with the knowledge acquired from the fellowship.
  • An official letter confirming the status issued by the nominating organization
  • a passport photocopy for the applicant.
  • Submissions with more than five attachments will not be allowed, so do note this.
  • Important: Include “Application for the 2023 Fellowship Programme for People of African Descent” in the subject line of your email.
  • The document is labeled as follows: FINAL NAME First name – Document type

  • Jacqueline Smith’s application form.
  • Jacqueline Smith’s Personal Statement.
