The NileWell Scientist-Journalist Co-Production Fellowship Program 2023 is now accepting applications. Journalists and scientists in the nations of the Nile Basin (Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Egypt, Sudan, South Sudan, DRC, Ethiopia, and Rwanda) are invited to apply through the NileWell platform for a fellowship program that runs from May to December 2023 and involves training, mentoring, and the coproduction of communication products based on scientific research.
The co-production fellowship program aims to enhance communication between the scientific community, the media, and Nile Basin audiences, such as local populations, people and organizations engaged in water and environmental conservation, and policymakers.

In order to improve media comprehension of science and research, this program also intends to foster collaboration between scientists and journalists who work in or near fields related to water. Scientists and journalists will collaborate to make science more approachable, clear, and interesting for one another and the general audience.
Regarding the Workshop
Throughout the fellowship program, 16 participants—eight journalists and eight scientists—will be chosen and taught in reporting on biodiversity, transboundary water resources, science, science communication, and data journalism.
This program will include an initial residential in-person training workshop for both scientists and journalists on how to collaborate effectively, as well as follow-up online training and mentorship sessions on particular topics, joint projects between scientists and journalists to produce communication outputs, and events that bring scientists and journalists together to share their work with the public.
Participants will then collaborate to co-create communication products based on the scientists’ findings during the program, such as short stories, podcasts, Twitter threads, blog posts, MoJo films, and others.

- Open to working journalists who are interested in writing about water science.
- You can apply if you’re a scientist or researcher working on a project involving water or the environment.
